Not someone I know a whole lot about, I hope was a good man.

I just played a live version of 'Devil went down to Georgia' - and the intro struck me as something Fairport could have played. Which is currently sending me down an Appalachian rabbit hole en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appalachian_music

I've watched a couple of interviews with him - he worked as a session musician for Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Ringo - all kinds you'd be surprised by.
I really don't care for his politics though.

Every once in awhile the FM rock stations I listened to as a teenager would play a couple of his songs. I always enjoyed them, but it never made me want to go out and buy any of his albums. A song or two every once in awhile was enough.

Frankly, I was surprised that so many of those "Outlaw" guys became such big outspoken right-wing jackasses. it doesn't take away from the music.

I guess like most they get scared at how much the world has changed and don't seek to understand it, but rather damn it. He seemed to tour regularly, had a spate of shows starting in August apparently. I was surprised at how successful he was, within the Southern Rock genre he outsold the Allmans, Outlaws, Marshall Tucker, Molly Hatchet individually and almost combined. Skynyrd reigns supreme there, even if you throw in ZZ Top.
