New directions in album packaging...

The special edition of "sound artist" Evicshen's new LP Hair Birth comes in an album cover that doubles as a speaker-of-sorts.

The art is the speaker and the speaker is the art. The width of a continuous copper coil is modulated as it radiates across the surface of the jacket to render the image of my face mid-performance from a show last summer in Kumamoto, Japan. The coil, when connected to an audio amplifier and placed in front of a magnet, turns the material of the cover into an active speaker membrane. The whole thing dances and vibrates in your hands as you listen to the album, as it pushes the particles in the air back and forth to create invisible waves that we perceive to be sound.

I confess, I love shit like this... though whether I love it enough to pay $73 - $100 for it is another matter.

It looks lenticular. Music -wise reminds of when something gets stuck in vacuum and I try to pull it out whilst its still running. I'm sure Darkness Fish has already ordered.

If it doesn't come with a suitable magnet, it seems like a half-realised art concept to me. Still, I might give it a listen based on symbols' recommendation...

It does come with a magnet. (Only the more expensive option comes with an amp, though.)
