Phil collins played drums with Led zepplin at live aid. Did not know that until today. While a respected? drummer, it just doesn't look or feel right. It's also funny that the Zep blamed him for the shite performance and he told them to fuck off they were shite.
Any other examples

When I saw the reformed Roxy Music in the early oughts, Chris Spedding was on board as second guitarist. His playing was exemplary, but compared with the other characters on stage he looked like a homeless person.

Spedding's a slightly odd case. He played on the Pistols' NMTB and on the big Eno albums, and he had that novelty hit in the 70s, but he's still kind of anonymous. I'm surprised Ferry allowed him to be wheeled out for live shows. Or maybe he thought he'd look good alongside We could probably think of a few examples for your friend and mine Dave Grohl...

Not a musician as such, but I thought Mick Hucknell was an odd choice for the reformed Faces live show of a few years ago, although by all accounts he did a decent job. Steve Jones being Dylan's guitarist for a few years is another strange one, but then Dylan is nothing if not eccentric.

I thought it was kind of an inspired choice. It may have been, but it was still a bit incongruous. Simply Red and The Faces aren't exactly similar.

Paul Rodgers with Queen. What were they thinking?
The guy they got from the music show was better.

And the Filipino guy who took Steve Perry's shot. He may do a reasonable facsimile, but it wasn't like Dio replacing Ozzy.

I had to look this up to see if it was the Steve Jones I was thinking of and surely it is. Wow, never would have expected that but looking at his wikipedia entry, he's played with loads of people.
