Yeah, we're all agreed it's one of the greatest songs ever recorded, and we're all gutted that there's not a decent Ian Curtis version. But which of the following is the best cover:

All decent, the song is well built to take a tussle, 2 out of 7 dentists agree. Radiohead probably embody it the best. Galaxie 500 trust fund slacker babies, I distrust on principle.

Thom Yorke is trying too hard to be Ian on that. I liked the Chromatics better, the other two aren't adding enough to the sound either.
The problem with covering Joy Division is bands try too hard to be reverential and respectful of the original material. They're terrified of going too far from the vision and the result is often close to a parody or some lifeless imitation. I'd choose to listen to Grace Jones' She's Lost Control, as wacky as it is, than any of these.

The Blackouts is probably the best attempt at a sonic recreation, having the best drummer of the bunch, but in cover terms playing the song straight is always fairly pointless to me. The Chromatics attempt to do more with it, possibly with a nod to Galaxie 500, and I think it works pretty well.

The last one is the only one that doesn't suck the life out of the song, but it was so faithful to the original that it seemed pretty pointless. I honestly wouldn't bother with any of them.

There was life in the song?

There was life in the song? The original so so propulsive with the drumming and the layered meshes of bass and guitar. I know you're a New Order denier, but c'mon even you must have liked it once.

I love the song, but at the moment I can’t think of any other song that sounds more like a corpse than this one does.
