So for some reason Zep's honour at the Kennedy Centre from 2012 was in my youtube feed and I'm watching some of the performers do Zep songs. Kid Rock, not impressive but he olds his own. Lenny Kravitz does 'Whole Lotta Love' - what a piss-poor vocalist. He is sooooooooooo not up to it. Kravitz, imo, is just a prettyboy copyist with a weak voice. Wtf were they thinking? You don't get someone like that to try a Zep song. Here it is if anyone's interested: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jV4UoVr3f6wAny other examples where a poor performer really makes you appreciate the original?

Not that I didn't appreciate the original already, but the Mersey Foghorn's version of this probably ranks as my nomination of the worst cover (and it was a genuine cover, too, put out in an eventually futile attempt to take away the sales action from Bill, Bobby, Phil and Jack) I ever heard (although her cover of Dionne's Anyone Who Had a Heart is up there too).

I could fill this thread with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tributes.
The first time I really noticed this phenomenon, however, was Sgt. Pepper's with Peter Frampton movie.

Despite being a Beatles nut for a long time I had never seen the Sgt Pepper film, despite having a poster of it from the Beatles Magazine on my wall when I was about 12! But I watched some clips from it recently... Who the hell signed off on it? The idea isn't the worst I've ever heard, but the actual "performances". Astonishing.

No, let's be honest - it was a shit idea all 'round. It's like Yellow Submarine minus the wit and charm and eye candy. Oh, and minus the Beatles.

It was a bad idea, just not the absolute WORST I've ever heard. But songs/performances that weren't among the worst ever committed to vinyl would probably have lifted it somewhat. Yes I'm looking at you Alice Cooper and Steve Martin.

Every softly softly singing, trendy breaking at a high note, bed wetting, red wine drinking, cardigan, cunt/cuntress who sings the mighty Radiohead's creep or karma police, or the pixies's where is my mind. Fuck off. I say this hating creep.
