i think they ran their course, but there was something thrilling about them when they were in their majesty.
a great performance promoting their best album (IMHO), 'now i got worry'.

That was their peak, for sure. Some fun spats of energy afterwards but they kind of lost the spunk.
I saw them on this tour and they just killed. Never stopped for 80 minutes.

Never stopped for 80 minutes. good to see you posting on here, nathan! this place could do with a shot in the arm. i agree, they were unbelievable live at this time. one of the most exciting bands i've ever seen. such energy and conviction. seems strange that they never got bigger, when inferior bands like the white stripes and the hives all had their moment in the sun. they were great, up to and including 'acme', but dropped off with 'white fang'. i guess it must be hard to sustain that spirit and passion. strange too, that like 'the make up', they were never accepted or approved by the BCB cognoscenti back in the day! what do you think of jim jones and the righteous mind? they've clearly taken a lot from JSBX, but added their own twist. their live shows are just as good as the explosion at their peak.

I definitely like stuff on all of their later albums. I could easily make a killer single post-Matador compilation. But it just seemed like the spark was missing on so much of it. Judah went on to do some beautiful stuff with Cat Power and all that, though. And that last Explosion album might be their best since Now I Got Worry.
Also, I like a lot of Jon's side stuff with Boss Hogg and Heavy Trash. And the Spencer Dickinson record might be his best work after peak Expolosion.
I have not heard Jim Jones! Will definitely check them out.
