- from the last 100 years. So we're starting from 1920, the interwar years, where people were looking forward...
Would be great if people can think of 'low art' examples - B-movies, comic books, rock records. Choose only one from each type, if you can. And briefly justify your choices.
Some examples:
UK
books Trainspotting London Fields 1984 To The Lighthouse
TV Fleabag The Boys From The Blackstuff The Crown Monty Python's Flying Circus
film The Remains Of The Day The Third Man Kes Brief Encounter
music 'Strawberry Fields Forever' 'Live Forever' 'Anarchy in the UK' 'This Charming Man'
US
books Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas To Kill A Mockingbird Slaughterhouse Five The Catcher In The Rye Portnoy's Complaint
TV The Twilight Zone Twin Peaks The Sopranos The Simpsons
film Vertigo Citizen Kane The Godfather Mulholland Drive
music 'Heartbreak Hotel' 'Be My Baby' 'Into The Groove' Kind Of Blue
oh you know the kind of thing. Ignore the examples above - they're very canon, 'standard'. Go for personal over the accepted.
Actually, maybe avoid music altogether, unless you're dead keen. We've talked about that stuff over and over.
If this thing takes off (ha!) then maybe we could think about individual threads or some kind of competition or something.
Thanking you in advance for your cooperation.

I'll go with Scotland just to be Hungry Joe about it...
books Lanark - It's one of those labyrinthine books that creates its own world for you to get lost in. It's big, dense, very Scottish, authentic but also full of magical realism and weirdness that disorientates and thrills. I should read it again. I have no idea what parts are really about but that's ok.
TV Limmy - he's great, isn't he? Like the best, most distinctive British comedian around. he has a real eye for social situations and details and a -say-what's-in-my-head candour that is really refreshing. His best stuff manages to be both weird and familiar and you recognise yourself in him quite a bit. He has a real knack for faces too and it can be very silly and throwaway which I love (just him doing a stupid dance, shit like that)
film Local Hero - It's a great British film that manages to be oddly old fashioned, maybe even a bit quaint, but never patronising. It feels real, it's got a lot of heart and soul and bags of Scottish chookter charm.
music Party Fears Two - the greatest Scottish pop record of all time. Fucking weird too. Too often Scottish music is all denim shirts and recycled guitar pop whereas the Associates were really out there. This is flamboyantly over the top but also oddly moving in a way I find hard to express. Certain lines I guess, a general feel of desperation perhaps.
