Yeah, I went on the board late yesterday afternoon, and while I realize it's late everywhere compared to me, it was crickets. My posts of 7, 8, 9 hours ago were still the most recent posts.
Now, while that may be due to my thread-stopping tendencies, it reminded me of a restaurant that folks go to once, and while they kinda liked it, figured it was too out-of-the-way to go again. And when they do again, they wonder why it's out of business.
On the '80s cup, I am glad I'm outta there based on the voting. I stopped by yesterday and am always astounded at the tastes of people who profess to be huge music fans. Maybe it's me that has the bad taste, but obscurity is given way too much credence than it deserves in those things. The '70s cup did it for me. After so many years entering those things, it was time to cut my losses.

I'll never understand why, to the majority of board members (BCB or here), starting a thread is like heavy lifting. Absolutely unfathomable. Have you seen the response to my music threads?

By the way, when's the next 'state of the board' thread due? I'll stick it in my diary.

As a rampant obscurist, or really, someone from slightly on the sidelines from the mainstream, I come at it from a different angle. I'm always surprised that so many big hit songs are picked. I mean, the point of a cup for me isn't really to win, it's to hear something different (and hopefully enjoyable) in an isolated context, and write some brief thoughts based on an initial impression. I think that's enormous fun, but then I'm a bit of a sad-sack. Critical consensus and the concept of taste is given too much credence.

I don't mind hearing something new or haven't heard from a long time, but I especially dislike seeing an obscure or favorite song from an artist or band when there were so many obvious better ones - just for the sake of picking a "deep" cut.
