No that's not cultural appropriation.
And yes he knew how to gather together the right musicians to achieve something highly distinctive. That's not a stick to beat him with, that's something else to praise him for.

You are Chance the Gardener & I claim my 5 American dollars. You can do a lot with four American dollars - just imagine what you could do with five!

Nah. He's not overrated. And I wouldn't be troubled if he were.
Like A LOT OF PEOPLE (whatever their facility, greatest virtues, etc.) I love, his best work really casts a hell of a shadow over the whole franchise. I mean, we rate the Beatles (largely) on 7 years of their lives. There's not going to be any massive disputes about when the Smiths, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Brian Wilson, or (more saliently?) Neil Young flew closest to the sun.
I think your legend, your rep, your brand probably SHOULD dine out on that for eternity.

Whoa!
I didn't realize he'd been out and about that close to the end (roughly a month). For a 68 year old man who had already written, recorded, mixed and mastered a record about his assured imminent demise, he really looks like a million bucks.

I think that's what stumped people so much, the dichotomy between his cancer and how well he looked. It made taking the news that much harder.
