Edging closer to a job hopefully. Went for a tour of a school today - met the headmaster, who's essentially Santa Claus in looks. It's a small private school about a 15 minute drive from me, with 180 pupils. Class sizes of around 15 at the very most and all in delightful grounds. The school specialises with some SEN needs and looks like it caters to kids who can't get in on the 11+ that still operates in Kent. It'd be totally ideal for me I must admit - I'd be the only History teacher and would be able to shape the curriculum as I wish. What priority do they place history as opposed to making toys, for example?

One thing I have to get off my chest. For the last month and a half, I've had to read about kids missing high school graduation ceremonies.
Do you know how easy it is to go through high school?
I remember both my son and daughter had passing ceremonies when they finished kindergarten and high school graduation seems like some participation trophy to me.
But I'm a bad person to ask. I didn't want to go through mine and saw no purpose at all. When I got my college degree, my attitude was, "Just send me the piece of paper."

I always took the university thing to be for the parents more than anything. Ireland didn't do that for primary or secondary level back in my day. It might make us soft.

Watching Spurs/Blazers from 99. I fucking love these games, the basketball was just better than now, just was. NBA TV is showing a lot of these. NBA playoffs were all tape delayed, if you can believe it, until Magic and Bird hit the scene and playoffs went real time. Before that, you had to stay up until 11:30 at night when they'd show the games. Magic and Bird's entire rookie year were like that. But yeah, I enjoy those old games too. Those were my prime playing and NBA watching and it's uncanny how I can remember details. ESPN is showing NCAA games and the same goes. Monday, ESPN would show the Big East games and the ACC was always prime viewing. Watching those No. Carolina games with Kenny Smith at point and Brad Daugherty at center, brings back memories. If anyone questions Kenny Smith's skills, remember he won both the dunk contest and three-point contest at the All-Star game, different years, of course.

something rather wonderful happened to me over the lockdown. the wife of my first ever best friend contacted my sister via facebook and put us back in touch after more than 30 years without contact. i first met him at primary school and my earliest memories of him were playing batman and robin at the age of 4 in the playground (which he remembers too). we've had a couple of zoom calls that lasted over 3 hours in which we spent much of them laughing hysterically and reminiscing over old times. the experience has left me strangely melancholic with a sense of remorse over all the lost years. bittersweet i suppose. he sent me a photo of me at school with another great pal 'mary' who was the spitting image of harpo marx, shared here for your enjoyment.

I've gotten in contact with some old friends too. I had two long conversations with my friend, Tim, this week. I used to pick up Tim at his house on my way walking to school for five or six years, elementary to first year of high school. Almost every afternoon, we'd play basketball in his driveway on the way home.
Tim was an only child and he said I was the closest thing he had to sibling. I felt the same way.
And we both bitched about our ex-wives and talked up our kids.

Yeah ESPN europe showed a lot of old skool CBB. Watched Georgetown win the championship, houston with olajuwon/sampson, a game from Jordan's rookie season for UNC, bird/magic championship final game and lots more. Skysports are showing old NBA games. Got a pleasant surprise when they showed knicks/pacers from 90s. It was a game i asked our neighbours to record for me because they paid for sky sports. I musta watched that 10 times because i didn't know when I'd see another NBA game. Aw, 14 years old and basketball was life. I'm finished watching the present day NBA. I'll stick to college or euroball next season.

I like watching those teams other than the Bulls because it reminds me how good those teams were too.
Pacers: Reggie Miller, Mark Jackson, Chris Mullins, Dale Davis, Antonio Davis, Rick Smits.
Trailblazers: Drexler, Jerome Kersey, Cliff Robinson, Kevin Duckworth, Buck Williams, Rod Stickland, Terry Porter.
Seattle: Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, Schrempf, Kendall Gill, Ricky Pierce, Michael Cage (at end of career)
Suns: Kevin Johnson, Tom Chambers, Majerle, Ceballos, Barkley, Oliver Miller, Mark West.
And those are the guys I can remember off the top of my head. Makes it clearer why the Warriors never cracked the playoffs even with some decent teams.

I go grocery shopping early on Sundays to avoid the crowds and sometimes to pick up a thing or two during the week. Always early morning, like 7 am or 8 am at latest.
Invariably, there is some guy my age checking out at the same time whose only item is some strong alcohol. Today, it was a guy with a tall can of malt liquor and the other day it was a guy with two cans of 8% alcohol strawberry margarita. You know these guys aren't saving it for later, but drinking it as soon as they can.

Nothing like tall, frosty CAN of margarita at 8 in the morning...The best part of waking up is tequila in your can..

A friend's son got drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. The draft was cut down to only five rounds from nearly 30 in past years. He's a pitcher.
I worked with the dad at an ice cream shop in high school, as did my brother, but we hung out while not working too. He had a very cool fastback Mustang in high school. It's funny though, the dad was never really into playing sports that much. Watching, yeah, but not playing.

I read a funny thing from a comedian the other week about the recent Michael Jordan documentary. He was saying that Jordan "put in the time," and the comedian was saying that if he'd known all he had to do was practice more to make the NBA, he'd have done it too. Except for height, quickness, reflexes, and strength, I coulda made the NBA too. Cuz I put some time into lots of sports.
