I love it. It's a fascinating place.
I want to know what happens to all the hundreds of guest houses when it's out of season.
And why Katie Hopkins is doing dates here.

The hotels will be holding lots of asylum seekers, and Katie Hopkins is a bigot trying to appeal to the people who don't like forriners.

Heading to HCM City this evening for a 2-night stay; my Australian Rules Football team, the Hong Kong Dragons, is playing the Vietnam Swans tomorrow. Should be a ripper. Never been to VN before so looking forward to it.

I booked a flight to Podgorica - which is described by some as 'the most boring capital city in Europe' (it's the capital of Montenegro) - a few months ago when it was cheap. I thought it would be a good starting and ending place for a three- or four-stop trip around the Balkans, which is something I've wanted to do for years. But it's not, 'cos trains across the whole region are rubbish. I could take flights or maybe coaches between stops, but....that's really not appealing. Anyway - flight there on June 17th, and flight back on June 28th. There IS a train from Bar to Belgrade, which passes THROUGH Podgorica - and the journey is supposed to be spectacular. But it would mean me sitting there for something like nine hours. Even with the best sandwich I can conjure up, and the best views from a train window you can get, I don't think I could stick it for that long. www.seat61.com/belgrade-to-bar-railway.htmbut I do want to see Belgrade (again - I was there 20 years ago) I've spent way too long trying to work out an itinerary. I think I might fly to either Krakow or Zagreb after a couple of nights in Pod, then another flight to Bucharest or somewhere, and then back to the UK.

Well, the trip to Ho Chi Minh City was a blast! Got there Friday evening about 9pm local time, and pretty much went straight out with some of the crew to hit the bar and restaurant area nearby; drinks were had and banh mi were consumed. Got back to the hotel about 2am, and I was one of the early ones. Saturday morning we were off to play our matches - just over 40 of us made the trip from Hong Kong, enough for a men's AFL team as well as an AFLW team. It was a stinking hot day, 37 degrees celsius, and in the sun it felt well over 40. Plenty of sunscreen was applied, and the Vietnam Swans team who were hosting the match had plenty of water and ice on hand. Very well organised. The games were held at the RMIT campus in HCM City, a very nice grass pitch. In terms of the matches though, we (the HK Dragons teams) got smashed. The Swans have terrific men's and women's teams, young and fit Aussies as well as a BIG number of Irish guys and girls who live in the city and have joined the Australian Football League teams, perhaps because there is not much of a developed Gaelic Football presence there. Not sure, but either way the Irish Swans with their speed and agility ran rings around us poor Dragons. I managed to score a goal, which i am happy about, but it was a tough, fast, intense game and and made even tougher by the conditions. But there were no major injuries or incidents, and on the day football was definitely the winner. The night we once again hit the town, got well fed and watered in several local bars until the wee hours. Got up at a decent time to enjoy some brekkie and a swim in the rooftop pool, before heading to the airport after lunch for our flight back to HK. A super fun trip, brief as it was.

Sentence I never thought I'd write:
Just a couple of hours till I take my dance exam for bronze and silver awards at salsa. If I never hear Shakira or Camila Cabello again, I'll die a happy man.

Passed it, btw. 87% - highly commended. Now, if there's ever a latin-dance emergency, I can be called on by government special forces and deployed within minutes.

The shittest trains. Bleak. Someone had done a Mr Whippy shit on the only big seat on the train. Still traumatised. We wanted to get to Istanbul so it was worth it, but, fuck. Avoid them trains!
