That great British institution, might be on its knees after Covid-19. The traditional rural pub around here has pretty much died out already - you have to serve food of some sorts otherwise it's game over. If you don't serve a Roast on a Sunday, then you've lost your custom to another place. Wetherspoons will thrive, as it has done in the past, because I think Tim Martin understands that the pub plays an enormous part in British culture. Pre-Covid, did you go to the pub much? Will you miss them if they start to die out? Is the old pub (focus on beer, chat) better than the new pub (focus on food)?

I don't think it's entirely down to that. The policy of keeping open old buildings for example plays a part, as is the policy of no music. I get it - most people will go somewhere that is cheap, particularly the older generation, but the decor of the pubs plays a part too.

Pubs are sorely missed here, they mean a bit more than just going for a pint. It's a reason for some people to get out of the house to meet friends, or just get a break from their family for a few hours. For the old bucks it could be the only interaction they get with people, so it's hitting them the hardest.

I love pubs. American bars, even local hangouts, can't compete.
The only bad thing is they're populated by Brits. Except for that, I'd give them a 100 on a scale of 100.

Spoons bars are way too big to replicate a proper public house. They're more like casual restaurants. And their Guinness is usually shite. This is my local, one of the most popular pubs in the town, but I've avoided it through lockdown.

love English pubs, but not the prices or the choice of lagers.
i've been to a few half decent weatherspoons, but in general i find them quite sad and lacking character.
i have no interest in gastro pubs and much prefer to snack away on nuts or crisps while necking back bottled lager.
i suspect that toby's thread might have been influenced by the tom kerridge programme, 'saving britain's pubs', which makes for grim viewing.

I do intend to give it another go. So you could be right, you could be wrong, but your Guinness in pubs is still dung. whay hey, i'm a poet and i don't realize it.

Our guinness comes from St James gate big lad. Aye it does, it would help if the pubs treated it correctly when they got it.
