The only time I have been discerteous to a barmaid was in a bar in Aberdeen after she poured my Guinness in one continuous flow. The manager to her credit apologised. I was surprised at how upset I became.

looks like an interesting place, if it still exists: /photo/1 What made you post that? I've been there, but I think it was in the late 90s. Amazing tiles!

I was surprised at how upset I became. I had an enormous quantity of Guinness in the bar on the overnight ferry from Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire in 1993. We were supposed to disembark at 8 am but I was incapable of any basic function - arms, legs and mouth all loose as a goose. And greeted by the respectable parents of the girls we were going to be staying with in Dublin. I needed to spend the rest of the day in bed, toddled downstairs later terribly embarrassed. Didn't touch a drop of the stuff again.

I fail to see or understand the appeal of Guinness.

It's a working class stout that feeds you. It isn't rhubarb cider of course.

I love a Guinness. Only drink it in the winter though.

I love pubs, I love beer, it seems such a happy coincidence that the two are so closely related. I think that the death of the pub is much overstated, or was pre-Covid; sure there have been a lot of closures, but a lot of these were the brewery owned building that time forgot. Had to serve Tetleys, Carling and Strongbow, didn't do food, didn't decorate or clean. There was no effort to try and entice any new customer, other than a chalkboard advertising last-week's football match. Micropubs seem to have sprung up everywhere, and they do well. Clean, fresh places with a variety of drink. The boom in gin seems to have helped, you can't go into a bar these days and it not have a wall of different gins, but the microbreweries seem to have had a good thing going, too.

I'm glad the pubs will be open from Monday, hopefully. Me and boys are already planning day out in the pub. Some guys have gone a bit "the shining" being locked up at home.
