I used to get called 'Coan' sometimes on BCB (and still occasionally here). It's the mark of a wanker to address someone using only their last name, as far as I'm concerned. Keep that sort of shit to the military. And yet some people seem to dislike being addressed by anything other than their actual first name - abbreviations or other forms aren't welcome AS I HAVE JUST FOUND OUT Most languages have the diminutive form - I suppose we use the -y ending often to indicate a similar thing. Johnny, Billy, Betty etc. The Russian word vodka is the diminutive of voda (water) and I suppose the Spanish word Dorito is 'little Dora' (?) How do you like to be addressed (not nicknames - we already had a thread for that)? does it depend on who's talking to you? If you have a middle name, do you ever use it?

Sorry John. I don't mean to be grumpy, but it is simple manners to address people as they wish to be called.
I know that shortening a person's first name to their initial is a cultural artefact of the internet, but I don't really like it. Perhaps it's more likely with "T" because the letter is an elongated syllable of its own. You don't see people being called "L" or "W" for example, whereas "T", "B" "J" and "G" seem to be more common.
Messageboards do obviously make things a bit more complicated, because it is acceptable to be called by your username. So I'm known as Bleep on BCB and always well be, just as John is called "Slider" and Pete is "Diamond Dog" for lots of people.
FWIW, I think as adults, using surnames is a form of affection in some respects. You did call yourself "Sir John Coan" on BCB, so Coan would naturally emerge, particularly as you were pretty combative on there.

It's a good question. My real name is Guy. Hard to make smaller. But I do get called 'Gus' sometimes, which is appalling. I also get called 'G', 'GT', 'T', 'T-Man', 'Big T'(!),'Guy Cool', and sometimes "Fonzie'. Plus 'Montel' for arcane reasons. But you can call me 'Darling'.

I've always been Toby. When I was much younger, people would say "oh that's a Dog's name" or "is your real name Tobias". So over the years I've been a bit defensive about it to be honest. Now, Toby isn't a "common" name for children like Oliver etc, but it's prevalent enough - I taught at least 3 Toby's last year.
My best friend is called Emile. He's had a ton of shit over the years over his name, so much so that when we went clubbing, people would go "eh?" in a loud club, so he'd just say "John" instead. Thankfully the rise of Emile Heskey as an international footballer made his life a lot easier.

I am, amongst my circle of friends, Johnno. That's how it has always has been. But my partner, whoever she has been, has always called me Brendan. My actual name has been a more intimate nickname than any other nonsense. One of the weirdest and saddest moments was when I heard a recently separated girlfriend call me Johnno. It was more final than the breakup itself.
Funnily enough my now wife and I have pet names for each other and I almost bristle when I hear my actual name. Although she does use it a lot though, and I'm very much like "I'm the only person in the room with you, you don't have to address me by name!"
Anyway, to cut a long story short, you can call me whatever you like as long as I'm not fucking you. If you are, it just feels better if you call me Brendan.

Why would you object to COAN? It's more distinctive than plain old John. I call friends by their surname all the time. It's like a mark of respect.
I get called various names....Doug, Douglas, Dougal, Dougie but prefer Dougie or Douglas. I'm not fussed though.

The name as well, COAN, it's quite unusual. It's distinctive.
It could also be a Spanish soap brand.

Well I always read it as KOAN. Which seems rather apposite.

Ray does just fine, as is Rayge on the interwebz. I've been just plain Ray since I was old enough to care. Anyone who calls me Raymond and isn't from the previous generation of my family (all dead now) gets/got ignored. I don't mind R at all on forums. Those who decide to call me Raymonde don't get any shrift at all. My second given name is George (where the ge of Rayge comes from), which was my father's name. I use it in dealing with officials, and sometimes whimsically refer to mysef as R George Granger, but that's it.

It's brutal, always sounds like an order. I take TOBY's point about my name being public tho'. Maybe that's why people don't tend to use their full names on message boards (how many do you know who DO? Matt Wilson, me...who else?)

I am genuinely sorry for calling you Coan, coa...John. I called a co worker andy once and he let me know straight away in jokey/serious way, that it's Andrew. Nuff said, it's Andrew. I go with what people want to be called, i'm guilty of making a play on people's name and kinda try and judge the mood if they like it or not. No point rubbing someone up the wrong way at the start of a conversation by calling them something they don't want. I get called Mark, Meeeark, or my surname. I have a few nicknames (other than Meeeark) that get dropped a few times. Bit like doug, if i call someone needlessly by their surname it's a sign of affection in that i like them. I always think it's funnier if you call a woman friend by their surname, if you're jokingly mad with them for example.

If someone calls me Thomson ever since my youth just winds me up. I have an annoying habit of changing people's real name . John is always Johnny or Douglas- Dougie. I know what John means . Your surname is always used by people in anger or before and during a fight/disagreement.
