At the co-ed grammar school I went to from 1959-66 the convention was that the boys were addressed (by teachers, and some kids) by their surnames, while the girls were called by their given names, with perhaps an add-on of a surname if there were two or more the same in the class. Anyone else live with this - I haven't given schools a thought since my teaching gig at the police college (all boys, all surnames) ended in the early 1970s?

The school I attended was surnames only too.
You got used to it after a while.
That's not the case now, although with misbehaving boys I will sometimes refer to them as "Master x" to get their attention and it's usually quite effective in that regard.

Here in Holland , but I think it’s not very different in the UK, the use of last names is typical for both working class and upperclass. It’s the middle class who don’t like it.
Probably they would not mind, it’s just the risk to be associated to the working class instead of the admired upperclass.
Can’t have that.

The name as well, COAN, it's quite unusual. It's distinctive. It could also be a Spanish soap brand. I like Coan of Silence.

We've done nicknames we've had in the past, but I was called by my last name a lot in school. I don't really care what people call me.
It kinda cracks me up when some people named Jim want to be called James. That's fine if that's what they want, but it seems kinda silly always having to correct people.
My mom's Swedish so at home I was Johann.
When we were little, my brother and I were called Johnny and Billy. My brother made a big stink at some age, insisting we all call him Bill at one point.

My eldest brother Jim was called "Jamie" when he was young. When he was 5 or 6, our parents said to him "We've been calling you 'Jamie,' but if you'd rather be called something else, you can be called something else. Your real name is James, so we can start calling you that, or you can be 'Jim' or 'Jimmy'... whichever you'd prefer." He thought about it for a bit, and decided he wanted to be called Peter. That was vetoed. (Peter Pan was his hero at the time.)

Just remembered a story of about a friend of mine Mick. His father hates him being called that, it's Michael or nothing. A mutual friend of ours, razor (actual name Ray) called to his house one day looking for him. This was when they were early teenagers. My friend's da answered the door and ray asked "Is mick ready?". The da went, "don't know, don't know any mick". To which s slightly discombobulated ray replied "Oh right" and walked off.
