According to Google, 64% of people on Facebook who joined extremist groups were recommended to join by Facebook. I see what my son looks on and subscribes to on YouTube and I can tell he's being negatively affected by the channel. There's some racist and mysogynistic stuff on there - not good reinforcement for an 18 year-old young man. Social media has replaced parents, other adults and friends as their social and moral guides - especially now
How do you think it's affected you in the last 10 or so years?
I'll give you one personal example. I remember going on the Mojo Forum years ago and while I was very excited about meeting fellow music geeks and learning more about music and watching people discuss it, I was kinda shocked at the language and attitude towards people who seemed to consider themselves friends. I can be a sarcastic guy, but was never very sarcastic around acquaintances or people I didn't know. But these people were letting each other have it, and it seemed to just wash over each others' backs. And then when BCB formed, the shit really hit the fan. People were outright hostile and were writing things, that even though they weren't directed at me because I was still lurking, put me off them for life.
One of the reasons I like Facebook is it forces me to be restrained vs. other social media platforms. I let shit fly against politicians and Pres. Trump on Twitter just because it makes me feel better even though I know no one is reading my responses.
But, I don't think social media has reinforced me being a better person. Not at all. I watched this last night and realized that we may not be as in control as we think we are. It's very much a Deux Ex Machina type of tale.
