ringo starr: “It was the worst track we ever had to record. It went on for fucking weeks.”
john lennon: “I hated it”. “All I remember is the track – he made us do it a hundred million times.” “He did everything to make it into a single and it never was and it never could’ve been".
george harrison: “Sometimes Paul would make us do these really fruity songs,”“I mean, my God, ‘it was so fruity.”
any ideas what harrison meant by 'fruity?

Fruity meant a bit camp and cheesy I think.
I can't remember if they're talking about Maxwells or Ob La Di. The comments could be about either!

It's an American term I think amd a fairly archaic one now. I'm sure I remember Salinger using it in Catcher in the Rye via the narrator, to describe a character who was obviously meant to be gay.

but how are these lyrics 'gay'? i'm hoping that i'm not missing something obvious!
Joan was quizzical, studied pataphysical Science in the home Late nights all alone with her test-tube, ohh uh oh oh Maxwell Edison majoring in medicine Calls her on the phone Can I take you out to the pictures, Joan But as she's getting ready to go A knock comes on the door Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer Came down upon her head Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer Made sure that she was dead Back in school again Maxwell plays the fool again Teacher gets annoyed Wishing to avoid an unpleasant scene She tells Max to stay when the class has gone away So he waits behind Writing fifty times I must not be so, uh oh oh But when she turns her back on the boy He creeps up from behind Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer Came down upon her head (Do do do do) Bang, bang,…

Fruity meant a bit camp and cheesy I think. You guys use the term more than Americans, but I always take it meaning overripe - too sweet, verging on spoiled.

"Fruit" was a derogatory term for homosexual. Archie Bunker used it quite often.

In the first verse Maxwell is introduced as a university student, but then in the second verse he becomes a schoolboy! And rhyming 'again' with 'again' in the same line...very poor.

What exactly were they doing over and over again? It's utter shite.

What exactly were they doing over and over again? Recording the track, they did many takes.

Its like something from play away or rainbow. Richie Blackmore won't like that!
