I thought about posting this, but realised I didn't have anything to say or indeed cared very much (not that I have any dislike of her either).

I thought about posting this, but realised I didn't have anything to say or indeed cared very much (not that I have any dislike of her either). yes, i felt the same way. more of a celebrity than a talent with some nefarious connections to English gangsters, the krays, richardsons and ronnie knight which she seemed to play on. i think 'sparrows can't sing' was probably her only noteworthy performance. in the carry-on films she wasn't really anything other than eye-candy. RIP nevertheless, as she certainly established herself as a British institution.

I think you've summarised her very well. One of those people who became a bit of a 'star' (albeit only in Britain) without doing that much. I remember being surprised when she first appeared in Eastenders, thinking she was too big for a tv soap, but really it was the natural thing for her to do, what else was she going to do?

I'm hearing all this stuff now about how she had a big heart and was loved by all - is that really true? I thought she was a bit of a *@$*!

The parents, prior to Covid, used to visit the local Weatherspoons a lot. They made friends, as you do, and one of these friends was Babs former hairdresser. Local loon fae Leith but he lived down in The London for years and he was still in contact with her by phone. I asked questions, it all checks out btw. Effusive in his praise of babs.
RIP

Dunno where you got the negatives from, JC, but everything I heard about her (and I first became aware of her when she was working for Joan Littlewood in the early 1960s, and she was generally considered a real judge of talent) suggest she was indeed big-hearted, and I never heard anyone say anything against her, except maybe in her choice of husbands and lovers. And while the Carry-Ons did her no favours, all those straight acting chops she showed in Sparrows Can't Sing – as well as her comic touch - came flooding back when she got some decent scenes to play in EastEnders ( I know you Northern types disdain it, but some of the writing is exemplary - or was, I haven't seen it in over a decade)

Sorry - just to clarify, it's not that I myself thought she was a bit unpleasant, or anything like that. I just thought I'd read somewhere that she was a bit of a pain. Maybe I'm mixing her up with someone else.
Anyway it's nice to hear all the tributes. Christopher Biggins was preposterous on the news earlier - 'as if the TRAGEDY of losing Cilla wasn't bad enough....'
