When I was younger, I always felt the pressure to do something special on New Year’s Eve. I’d be out and about with friends looking for somewhere exciting to be. It always ended up feeling pathetic.
But somewhere along the line, I let go of all that. Now I just enjoy the circus of watching others try to find a way to mark the passage of time. It is what we humans do. We need these entirely arbitrary moments of demarcation to give us a reason to celebrate/mourn, take stock, look backwards and forwards. It’s all fine by me.

I went out for my usual constitutional just before midnight last night but slipped on the ice in the car park behind the building and fell hard on my arse and my right side. I must have lain there for 30 seconds just cursing. Nobody else was around. Eventually I pulled myself up and brushed all the shit and ice particles off my coat and hobbled off down the street sorry to hear about your fall, JC. were you wearing your new pea coat? I was! it cushioned my fall
