always hated it. it's the one night of the year i associate with some pretty horrendous memories. one particular one was a journey across london starting out from the sir george robey pub in finsbury park, lurching through trafalgar sq and ending up at the arse end of a shit party in acton.
tonight it will be spent indoors in rumination and taking stock.

A bartender friend of mine used to call it Amateur Night.
Tonight, the ex and daughter are coming over to my place so I have to go buy some food in a little while. Four people in my small apartment tends to get me a little tense so I have to watch myself so I don't break my abstinence from booze.

It has meant increasingly less to me as a celebratory affair as time goes on. We'll have a nice dinner and some wine, and most likely be asleep before midnight.
My most horrendous New Year's Eve happened at the end of 2004, when the party turned into a ridiculous three-day cocaine-fuelled bender which culminated in one of the worst hangovers I've ever had and the abrupt termination of a 20-year smoking habit (which was the only good thing to come out of it).

It was always huge growing up, especially where I come from. I've lost enthusiasm over the years and the local festivities have been ruined by the council and too many tourists frankly so I don't even go out anymore.
This year I will be inside getting pissed and eating a massive Chinese takeaway from leith's best establishment. We might pop round to say hi to a neighbour or two as well.

I read a very interesting op/ed last week - I wish I could remember who & where. the writer made a very convincing case that "The New Years Eve" celebration has been anachronistic for a while. He or she further suggests that the COVID fiasco be used as the excuse to radically change how we observe it.
I'm glad to see free taxis and all these sort of solutions in recent years. I seriously doubt me and the mrs are the only people who haven't given a shit about going to a "new years eve party" for YEARS.
maybe it's time for something else. that whole Wicker Man thing seems interesting.
