while i admire A for sticking to their guns, they're not going to get many votes. i just can't listen to this kind of thing for too long. it's not my bag.
of the newer tracks selected in this year's cup, B is certainly the best i've heard so far. he has a really good voice. i'll probably check out some of his other stuff off the back of this track.

I've liked some Opeth that I've heard pretty well, and I appreciate it for what it is, I guess - there's something impressive about sustaining the mood through all the various changes - but 13 minutes of it is still a big ask.
B is a bit too cutesy, but the melodic nature and the, needless to say, much more subtle vocal win me over.

First off, you gotta admire the ballsiness of a 13min Opeth pick, and it's LIVE. A brave soul, for sure. I'm inclined to give them my vote simply for throwing caution to the wind.
I gave B a chance, and sorry. Fuck B. Gimme Opeth.

I admire the dude that put the Opeth track into the cup. This is a great version of one of their best. from the 10:30 mark it is just fucking awesome! I love it.
Cheers.

A seemed to spend so long tuning up, that I jumped to the 2.00 minute mark. I wish I hadn't.
B is a very well-crafted, considered song. But there's something in it that's not quite working for me: an overly sweet quality perhaps, a certain earnestness.. but whatever it takes this easily.

I like that someone entered the Opeth song, but Rayland Baxter has a lot of Ray Davies best qualities.

The second track is pleasant enough, just not terribly interesting..The first requires more skill to pull off..Vote A

I appreciate the Opeth pick, even though it brings me no joy listening to it. I've always struggled with metal - it's me, not you - and this track isn't doing anything for me.
As for B, I really like it - melodic, very well-crafted, and while it doesn't seem to go anywhere, I like a lot of stuff that doesn't go anywhere.
So...
B.

opeth is fine for that sort of thing. Sadly I don't have enough hair to swing along and enjoy it properly.
B is nice. I'll have a trim. square around the ears no hair over the collar.

Another matchup I can't get excited by.
I'm sure A could use a vote.

With skope on B here.

A 13 minute Opeth track, I can't possibly imagine who'll have picked this. I have actually seen Opeth live once, at The Download festival. Very post-rock ish from what I remember (which isn't much), lots of ambient noodly moments. Pity the band wasn't Deliverance, rather than the song, I have all three of their albums, Evil Friendship is a monster. Anyway, you have to say that this isn't a safe pick, it could do with more of the big crunchy riff sections, and less noodling, but it never gets really unpleasant in the way that Megadeth did. I think fonz is right, too, the closing section is definitely the best part, that almost Killing Joke kinda riff with a bit of funky drumming.
B reminds me of The Space Cowboy covered in syrup, which is not a sick fantasy of mine. It's a shame that it's against a bit of maverick overlong riffing, because even though it's piss-poor, if it had been against another old R&B 45, I'd have voted for it.
