Oh wow, that's genuinely the first Elliott Smith I've heard that's turned my head. Sweet. Strange to see him in what looks like an HD clip when he's been gone for - what? 20 years?
I do like a bit of Redd Kross, and this is a smashing album. This tune has to win this match because it tickles me more (the ES isn't something I'd want to play often, it's 'just' a well-written sad song)

Two "modern" acts (meaning younger than me) that I like a great deal.
A is one of my favorite Smith songs, but it's also one of his better known (as he, uh...mentions at the end) so it's only because it's losing now that I'm voting for it. Does the fact that it's a 'rare' version help? A bit, I guess.
B is fine and fun, and I like the Hollies-song references, but I just never have the same emotional investment in their stuff that I do Smith at his best.

Damn. You consider Redd Kross 'modern'? How old are you?

I mean, Redd Kross has been around since before I was conceived.

I always feel let down whenever I try to listen to Redd Kross - I just really dislike the way their records sound. This is no different and the song itself could be a Teenage Fanclub filler track.
I hopped on and off the Elliot Smith train with Either/Or, and never bothered with the album this tune comes from, but it's a pleasant enough little ditty, even with his dismissal of it at the end...

My favorite Redd Kross release is their covers EP, Teen Babes from Monsanto. There's a raw exuberance on that one that makes it a ton of fun. Great selection of songs as well

I've never managed to find much of interest in Elliot Smith, but I guess we've had very few waltzes in this cup. His voice is faintly annoying, like a rock star who's decided he's now a serious artist, very earnest, slightly hoarse, quite boring. I guess he felt the same way I do.
I don't think I've ever heard any Redd Kross before, though of course the name is familiar. You could pretty much mark the day on the calendar that this was recorded, it couldn't be more generically early 90s US indie-rock. The main melody really has a strng resemblance to something else, but I don't know if it's Oasis, which would hardly be their fault. But they should have been aiming higher, I think.
Ah, I'll vote for the waltz. It's not very good, but it's got more meat to it than B.

Interesting choice of RK track..Kind of generic "Keeping up with the Joneses" sort of thing..Might have had me with earlier RK..Vote A

I can see why people like Smith, there was certainly talent there, but he's too mopey for me to enjoy. I would probably have preferred the produced version of this rather than the stripped back live version. B could do with more light and shade in the arrangement. It actually reminded me of Oasis in that regard - a barrage of wall of sound guitars providing an ill defined murk for the vocals to ride over. Still a strong lead vocal and decent melody carry it through.
