I'd have voted for the moving final scene in About Schmidt where Ndugu's beautiful, simple drawing makes him cry. That one just sets things up. Great film tho'.
From those three of course it's the famous diner scene in Five Easy Pieces. They reshot it for About Schmidt - but instead of him losing his cool, he accepts the lack of choice with a shrug. They left it out of the movie because they didn't think audiences would get the reference.
He's great every time he's on screen in Easy Rider and One Flew Over....

A few years ago I would have definitely gone with the Diner scene. Today, there's an understatedness(?) in the 'About Schmidt' scene that I find very touching & humorous while not being cloying. I think it's his last great performance. So that's my vote this evening, anyway. All brilliant in their own way.
It was difficult to decide on 3 scenes as I didn't want to make a massive post, btw.

Maybe I’d nominate all 3 for the time capsule. “The Last Detail” has a special place in my heart. So does “5 easy pieces” & for a lot of the same reasons. “Detail” catches some very specific things about the 70’s I lived through.
We are ALL the fucking shore patrol & we’re all getting pretty sick of it.

Hal Ashby had one helluva run in the '70s. I got to him a little late I guess - the first of his I watched was Being There, which is still very special to me. The only one I haven't been able to get in to is Shampoo.
