I watched the first 20 minutes of raging bull last night and got thinking about Joe Pecsi. He's was pretty much deemed a character actor, while being very very good, i think it hindered his career. He has tried to break out of it with some lesser successful roles but nothing that stands up compared to his well known roles in Goodfellas and raging bull. The opposite side to that is that, i think Day lewis is a a character actor. When you look at his roles, there's few everyday men that he played. They were nuance characters that he studied intimately. Even with his success, i wonder did he miss out on roles because he was too character driven in roles.
What do you think, Is "Character Actor" An Unwanted Label?

Joe Pesci wasn't handsome enough or tall enough to be a leading male actor, at least not in mainstream cinema.

I don’t buy that Pesci’s career was hurt by anything other than Pesci’s periodic disinterest in stardom. Overall he’s had a great career anyhow. He does what he wants, when he wants to. Generally to universal acclaim.

He's a character actor too. In the majority of his films he didn't have the lead role, and the ones where he did tended to be smaller independent films.

Yes, as I said.
Charactor actors can still be pretty famous.

Well it's quite a nebelous term really, so probably everyone has slightly different definitions.

any actor worth a fig is a character actor. I like figs.
"My Cousin Vinny" was a leading man role and super successful for him. Admittedly it was pretty offbeat. I'll bet he makes more money as "a character actor" in things like "Irishman" & "home alone" than he did in "Leading Man Roles" like .... uh... "the public eye"
I heard Kevin Bacon on a podcast saying that his agent was begging him to take "character" parts YEARS before he started seeing the logic in it. I saw him in a trailer the other day & I thought he was Tom Skerrit. nice work if you can get it.
