The terms are. When you wake up in the morning and before you go to sleep you spent the day the way you wanted to.
Impossible I guess but that is the goal.

But there's a CANON bucket list, no?
swim with dolphins see the Northern Lights go to Macchu Picchu go white water rafting see the Great Wall of China
this is completely different to what you're suggesting, which is all about spending time with your friends and loved ones, having nice food, just feeling good

I guess, time and alas, money allows you the means to travel and discover whatever it is that rocks your world. You are right in that there does seem to be a canon list. There are probably commercial enterprises who (for a price) can make it all happen. A lot of the "canon" seems like short quick fix experiences. They are spare time dreams in busy lives.

So what do you want to do before you die? I'd love to see THOSE lists.
If pressed I don't think I could put one together. If I did, they would mostly be destinations - places I want to see. The other experiences that bring joy are usually unplanned, they'd not be on any kind of list because they're spontaneous.

Fuck's sake. DEFINE THE FUCKING TERMS Hey, you're turning into me It's something that bugs me, Ray - someone asks a vague question and before the ink's dry, everyone's (well, the four people here who give a shit any more) piling in to say what they think.

Like I say, just places. I suppose if I looked at one of those '100 THINGS...' lists I'd be able to pick out a few I'd like to do. The dolphins thing, maybe. But walking down Karl-Marx-Allee on a mild autumn evening is just as thrilling to me. As I think you can probably understand, Dougie

I'd quite like to have at least one more trip - it's been twelve years - see my grandchildren grow up and, you, know, see what happens next. I've either met, forgotten or learned to live without my meagre youthful ambitions.
But basically, all I want is to continue living with my faculties more or less intact for another two or three decades. And if I don't manage THAT, I won't regret it, because I'll be dead or doolally and thus past caring.

shit, I don't have any use for a bucket list. I know how I'm going to die. SMASH! "He didn't see that coming!" I’ve had SO many close calls that it seems it’s just a matter of time. Hmm..This needed a bit more suspense..Maybe "...It's just a matter of ti...." Nothing like a decent cliffhanger..

This could be an interesting thread.
I get what you are saying in that we have multiple things going on at once....
1. The concept of some kind of universal bucket list that is a bit of tick box exercise perhaps....soulless, unthinking 2. A personal bucket list that has more value and is worth exploring (I agree) 3. The idea that meaning does not necessarily come from visiting places or skydiving or swimming with dolphins but can be found in everyday experiences

The idea that meaning does not necessarily come from visiting places or skydiving or swimming with dolphins but can be found in everyday experiences That third point is the most interesting, I think, and worth talking about. Any kind of routine dulls the faculties. So 'everyday experiences' cannot mean 'things you do every day' - unless the implication is that there are surprises in the everyday. Somebody in the street gives you a special kind of smile, for instance, because there's no meaning in making a cuppa, watching the next Eastenders or walking the dog. You forget you've done it minutes later. Maybe it would help to look back and think about what 'brought meaning' (whatever that means) to you in the past, and then you know what kind of things to look out for in the future.

It all comes down to 'live your best life', or 'seize the day', or 'life isn't a dress rehearsal' - but we hardly ever get beyond the platitudes. Maybe because it's different for everyone. And nobody really knows anyway, until it happens.
