I'm trying to avoid those acts which are primarily associated with comedy, rather than music, so please try and refrain from posting Half Man Half Biscuit, Tom Lehrer, or even the great Richard Stilgoe. But it seems to me that genuine wit in music is rarely attempted, and even more rarely achieved. Misery, we have plenty of. Love songs, christ, that's 98% of all recorded output. Funny shit, not so much. So can you provide: - Whole songs which have humorous intent
- Songs with a particular cutting line or two
Failure to do so will result in more talk about The Beatles and Phil Collins.

The Ramones' wry humour in their early records is a big part of why i fell in love with them. Something like 'Commando' for example.

Pushing the bounds of my own restrictions here, as I Ludicrous might not always have been overly serious, but this ode to late 80s sports minister Colin Moynihan and his plan to introduce ID cards for football works for me:

And, as ever, The Monochrome Set's wordplay and Noel Coward aesthetic was as important as the music:

Failure to do so will result in more talk about The Beatles and Phil Collins. O.O Okay, you sold it. I'm really not into comedy acts - even nominally "quirky" ones like They Might Be Giants can be pretty trying. I'm a sucker for personalities, though - I think I fall in love more easily with people than specific songs or records. Robyn Hitchcock can be very funny sometimes, in his own way. I Pray When I'm Drunk is wryly hilarious. All Ye Sleeping Knights of Jesus makes me laugh every time. Pete Townshend used to be, when he wrote about wanking; less so once he discovered the concept album. Lou Reed has never been funny, has he? Follow-up question: Do musicians get less funny as they get older?

Does Viv Stanshall count? Louis Jordan made some funny records, though not necessarily witty. Spike Jones and the City Slickers, too, although I suppose they count as a comedy act, although it's a shame to lump in such genius with the likes of the Barron Knights.
And Leiber and Stoller's stuff for the Coasters is pure gold.

Lou Reed has never been funny, has he? He's a lot funnier than Robyn Hitchcock. Quite a lot of his late sixties songs were quirky. I was thinking that when listening to "I Can't Stand It" the other day. "Andy's Chest" is another one that used to make me laugh. You've got lines in his songs like "You held up a stagecoach in the rain and I'm doing the same". I'd say he had a sense of humour.

Sparks are good for this sorta thing although eventually it maybe got a bit too broad but lots of wit and humour throughout their career.
"You mentioned Kant and I was shocked/You know, where I come from/None of the girls have such foul tongues."
Generally speaking I avoid "comedy" acts like the fucking plague. I'd rather immolate a puppy than listen to Half Man Half sodding Biscuit.

I'd rather immolate a puppy than listen to Half Man Half sodding Biscuit. Fucking charming. How would you feel about stomping a kitten?

I think Cheap Trick do a nice job of it, as well as Blue Oyster Cult and Ratt, of all bands.
Adrian Belew can be pretty funny too.

We have a winner. Ween's country album is a hoot, not a hootenanny, but a hoot.

I've always felt Cardiacs had a great sense of humor both lyrically and musically. Albums like A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window and Sing to God are genuinely amusing and clever works. Plus, their forward-thinking approach and musicianship is something to appreciate even if their style doesn't appeal to everyone.
