Don't see him discussed much. I wAs a big fan of his Solid Air album back in the day, but I haven't delved deeply in his catalogue. Any fans? Recommendations? Thoughts?

The albums he did with his wife, Beverly are really nice Britfolk: Stormbringer and Road to Ruin. Road indicates where he was going with its smoky jazzy folk direction.

Mumbling drunk i try not to be too judgemental as far as musicians are concerned as most of them are cunts. martyn is a whole new level of cuntdom THO. he is one of the few folk artists who i've never got into. i would imagine that carlsson is a fan. as far as folk is concerned i'm still obsessing over the 'tudor lodge' album. infinitely better than anything martyn put out.

Not popular then. I'm not sure I'm the right guy to defend him as I'm more of a casual fan, but I would say his music can have a really atmospheric quality and he was more open minded and experimental than many of his contemporaries incorporating jazz and dub into his sound. I'll post up some vids later which may provoke more discussion.

You have trad tastes A, you don't like experimentalists. Martyn has more in common with Tim Buckley than he does his traditional folk peers.

I've tried with Solid Air a few times but it does nothing for me. That Echoplex sound...
Anyway although I can usually separate the man from the artist, in this case it's actually quite difficult because he tends to write gentle love songs and this was at odds with his sometimes violent temperament (which was due to his addictions, I know, but still...)

I used to listen to Solid Air every night driving home from my backshift. It's certainly a nighttime listen.
It's a great album and he's a great vocalist even if his delivery is an acquired taste.
Danny Thompson played on that one and he's a great foil for Martyn.
As for the rest of his catalogue it can be a bit like that old Joseph Heller quote when people used to tell him he hadn't written anything as good as Catch-22 and he would respond with who has?
Certainly that was my opinion having followed up Solid Air with Bless the Weather which I think has some nice songs but wasn't great.
I investigated One World after that followed by Grace and Danger and think they are just as good. All his albums have a great texture to them and I while he is marketed as a songwriter I am not sure he's someone you listen to for witty lyrics etc.
He's an innovator. He was using the echoplex and jazzier chords than all the Dylan wannabes. Worth noting his favourite album was Weather Report by Weather Report. I believe quite a few artists from the 90s like Massive Attack and Portshead were all fans.
"Small Hours" from "One World" is a favourite of mine to put on at night whilst relaxing and "Grace And Danger" is a great breakup album.

As you say his music is more about vibe and atmosphere than stand out songs. Nice post cheers.
