been gettin' high to this album. i really like it. i love the folk/indian crossover of 'snows' and the vocal dynamics between jansch and mcshee on 'people on the highway'.
i know that most on here consider the fairport convention as the best folk band, except for hatz who angrily buzzes around extolling the span.
for me, the pentangle were by far the best of the holy trinity of british folk bands.

Fairport are one of the few bands of the era I don't care for. Didn't have the adventure of Pentangle or ISB, didn't have the fun of Steeleye Span. Pentangle are definitely one of the greats, though I think Cruel Sister is their peak. I can just listen to Danny Thompson's basslines endlessly.

incredibly difficult band to get into. i think i admire more than love them. i could probably compile a decent 'best of'.

For some reason, Pentangle was always the most appealing to me of this ilk. Maybe it's because there was the most original playing by all members, whereas Fairport is more about the guitar. Pentangle were just naturally psychedelic. Solomon's Seal is actually the one I like the best.
ISB are the classic example of "better on paper". They seem like exactly the kind of thing I would like, but the reality is very much not. That movie about them was interesting because everything always sounds better in movies, where it's not just you alone with the music and there are images and edits.

I agree with most of this post apart from the ISB, they are beyond me.... Danny Thompson is a great musician and not heralded enough if you ask me...

We’ve said this before but this version of Willy is one of those as good as it gets things.
Breathtaking.
Particularly great is the way Jac trills the story like a footballer’s post-match interview
Well Clive, she’s cast off her berry-brown gown…
