At some point I think we should stop looking for treasures under the bottom of the boot. There's none left, I'm afraid. Of course there is, there are millions of tracks out there. Even if you restricted yourself to one genre - Northern Soul say- you could find some great tracks that the majority of people wouldn't know. I was thinking more of things like garage or punk. Sometimes it seems like people are looking for obscure for obscure's sake. But I'm looking forward to being proven wrong, that's why I'm here.

It's difficult to find stand out tracks in garage I agree because the genre can be quite formulaic.
At the same time there are probably genres that are under utilised where we've just skimmed the surface - rockabilly, reggae or early hip hop all spring to mind.

I'm keeping it to three random ties a day to get me through the week. Looking at the names of some of the acts fills me with foreboding. Three or four tracks I know well and a few bands I can get on with, but plenty of others I don't, or have never heard of. Nothing bettr than mediocre, at best, in the six I listened to today

Who can I talk to about changing the “needs some love” votes into abstentions?

But I'm looking forward to being proven wrong, that's why I'm here. the thing is oz, there are some of us who are not looking to vote on or select the tried and tested but who want to be turned on to new things. there is a huge element of risk in this and it usually backfires, because finding obscurities is much harder than putting up crowd-pleasers. personally, i get more of a kick out of turning someone on or being turned to something than winning a tie. this cup has produced slim pickings for me. 2 tracks from ole and one from hatz.

I just try and make it as varied as possible, include a couple of things I've been turned onto recently, and try and avoid any well-trodden paths. Never going to win a cup anyway, but it's gotta be better than picking some Beatles/Stones/Clash or Beatles/Stones/Clash wannabes.

Black metal, hip-hop, techno, post-punk, grindcore, grebo. Just because they're obvious, doesn't mean they're one-dimensional. Shocked I didn't include any folk though.

I thought both your black metal and grebo were folk. Technicalities. I try and keep it poppy, too, which is why I ended up with Ulver for the folky black metal.

He can defend himself, I know, but he really doesn't. I've been on forums with him for more than 15 years, and he's introduced me to a lot of different forms of music (goth, black and death metal, industrial, Japanese noiseniks among others) and bands (Legendary Pink Dots, Clock DVA, even - gulp - Jandek) I'd never come across that I rather like(d) and others, very different, that I didn't (Current 93, various Icelanders). Granted, he's not going to lap up blues, country, pop of almost any era, or anything much (other than some jazz and folk) recorded before the mid-70s, but the only thing most of the stuff he likes has in common is that it tends to annoy the BCB and Preludin canonistas

It always amazes me the number of genres that DF is claiming to differentiate and they all sound the same to me.
Edit: Written before seeing Ray's post above. Probably "sound the same" means annoying.

Probably "sound the same" means annoying. The only two tracks that have been in the same ball-park were Ghostpoet and Roots Manuva, both being British hip-hop, but even then there was a world of difference, and we were hardly flooded with hip-hop picks. I don't mind annoying though. Better than beige.
