A has the great luck that I am very picky about jazz, meaning I don't like much of it. There;s also the 0.99999999th percentile of Preludin members who would choose A. That person hardly ever likes the songs I choose for cups so his wrinkly ass got lucky this time.

It's impossible not to enjoy the lighted headed giddiness of A even if I've heard it a million times before. Would've liked to see a more adventurous Pentangle pick. Mind you, it wouldn't have helped that much because it's up against Leon mutherfuckin Thomas and one of Pharoah Sanders' most spiritually uplifting works. This song is for the absolute ages, its meditative power will never dim.

Both of these for a time were pretty overexposed. I love both artists. This for many will be Sanders' greatest tune, and they may not go any further.

toughest choice of the round.
the pentangle choice is so bloody obvious. of course it's one of their best but it's such an unoriginal pick.
i find pharoah sanders quite challenging but liked how it started. however, once it reached the 16 minute mark, it took me way outside my jazz comfort zone.
i hate to reward laziness, but i'd be lying if i said i wanted to hear the sanders track again.

Disappointing when the first tie is between two tracks I know well, and love. No chance to unleash some invective. I was tempted to abstain, but I'm voting for the Pharaoh, just on the basis of it being a more original choice of track. I don't know why that Pentangle track is always singled out they did many tracks equally as good.

FINALLY two fine picks. It's like waking up from your worst nightmare to hear the sweet sound of birds outside your window.

Ululations ahoy!
I sometimes wonder to myself if the first few bars of the sax solo in Springsteen's "Jungleland" weren't influenced by the opening bars of this particular Sanders track. This is such a fantastic record; I always get mesmerized listening to it. A doesn't stand a chance, even though it is a lovely tune.

Damn, another great tie, proper fange WHEELHOUSE territory. And Col has nailed this one for me as well.

These are both great. Toughest match of the round.
I adore A. Maybe it's a slightly obvious, but I honestly don't think they ever sounded better. It's got everything they do well in a crisp few minutes.
I'm reacquainting myself with B and, indeed, it takes a whole hell of a lot of commitment, which I don't always have. But man, does it ever reward it. Some of those vocalizations are just insane! Tim Buckley dreamed of being able to do that. And I love how it's so minimalist but has so much variation, then keeps coming back to the main theme. It's really one of the greatest jazz compositions ever. (And actually, well-known as such, therefore in its own way, just as obvious. But it still has the edge here.)

In a nutshell.
And while there's certainly a whole lot to admire in B, it's waaaaayyyy out of my ball park.
But I'll try to listen to the whole thing one more time, hopefully without my mind always meandering off somewhere else, promise!
