Penguin Cafe Orchestra
I’ve liked bits of these lot but not this. Brit minimalists liked to inject a bit of Zappa-esque levity didn’t they? Gavin Bryars I love but this is too far into Nyman territory.
PWEI
The Brum elite liked to sneer at the Stourbridge lot, a stones/glass houses issue writ large. The best I can say about this is it isn’t the worst thing to come out of DY7 through 9.

Interesting tie for me. Two acts I had heard of but never actually checked. Listening to these selections, I enjoyed B more than A, the usual 'closer to my comfort zone'. But if I were to check further I'd probably go for PCO first. Not sure that makes sense, but that's how I feel. In any case, I like both. Coin toss.

A is pleasant and inoffensive but I was hoping for a bit more than that. So B.

A is a robust rump, if a little short. Their semen-stained 'The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and it Doesn't Matter' might have suited me better, although looking at gambolling sheep for eleven minutes plus might have led to a certain drooping of the eyelids. So much seems to droop these days. I must say that the lack of anything tubbish is a demerit, but as Penguins have always been my favourite chocolate-covered tea-time accompaniment, the idea of a cafe specialising in them warms my slippers.
While bowing to my learned friend Dorkness Cod in his assesment of the Peewee's oeuvre, I personally have always found the idea of self-mastication to be Not My Thing, and feel that we should not be flinging the risqué elements of the lyrics - let along rubber gardening wear - in the face of our innocent pop kids.
So that's an A...

A – meh
But seriously, I’m a sucker for a giddy fiddle – so to speak – and I don’t mind this at all.
B is a single idea stretched out like mozzarella in a pizza advert until it reaches the moon.
