I stayed in Varanasi for a short time. It's a magical city, heavy in atmosphere, colour and weirdness. It's where they burn bodies by the Ganges and you also see dead bodies floating in the great river too. The hotel I was staying at actually had BAKED BEANS which after a few months in India was a real treat. Suffice to say I ate chips and beans every night I was there and in my room I'd smoke hash and listen to a Shankar cd I'd bought in the street. I took sitar lessons from some old fella with a big beard. Happy times.

I've been listening to Call of the Valley - Ravi Shankar is not on this album but it is a good gateway into that kind of music. It was probably curated for western ears, recorded by EMI, and came out around the time that Indian music was gaining a worldwide audience.
