i think there were many of us who initially thought of the undertones and then struggled to find a deep enough cut. unfortunately B has come up with a track from the arse-end of their career when sharkey had lost the plot.
A does nothing for me.

A sounds like something you'd hear played over the PA while you're waiting for a poetry reading at Chelmsford Town Hall or something. Baffling choice. And German singing is like American chocolate - not absolutely awful, but why bother when the alternatives are so much better?
Ah! a track from the much maligned final Undertones album. I like it but don't love it, and there are better tracks on there for sure (the pumping 'Bye Bye Baby Blue' for one). Still an easy win here

Had heard of Ute Lemper, but don't remember having actually listened to her. Great singer indeed. Pity about the song choice. I was familiar with it by mercy of Marianne Faithful, and never liked it. Too overdramatic and the chorus and verses seem to come from different songs. There must be a lot of better Kurt Weill's songs by the same singer.
I quite liked B, without being overwhelmed.

Who doesn't like a happy ending, huh? Uwe Rosler does a decent job here, so far only the brief bit of slide guitar has annoyed me, but it's also not really dragging me along, it does feel like part of a musical, where you really have to understand what's going on to appreciate the song. And my understanding of German is sehr richtig nicht gut.
Undertones gone all New Wave, and it's all a bit awkward, forced, and Feargal's vocals are more annoying and dramatic than Ute's. It's a clumsy, unlikeable thing.
Didn't really care for either at all, but I'll give A a shot for the adventurosity.

The juxtaposition between the rather nondescript playing and Feargal in full...Uh, Feargal, is kind of interesting. But the song doesn't really go anywhere new after the first minute or so. Needs more Punk.
What Osgood complains about is exactly what I like so much about Weill! His musical choices often seemed quite random on the surface, but I think that was perfectly suited for Brecht's lyrics, which were often meant to be jarring. A great writing team, and I don't think it's out of line to say they were a huge influence on Brooker and Reid, among other 'rock' teams we admire. And unlike B, which comes out of the gate strong then peters out, it starts off rather vaguely and picks up more and more steam before the end. I wish it was in English just because that would make it easier for me to follow along, but it's still a bold choice.

A could be Marlene Dietrich singing in the thirties,not sure what A is bringing that's new to the table. Fine in the right context - a cabaret performance, a Brecht play etc, but not something I'd want to stick on at home. I really like late period Undertones, neo-psychedelia suited them and broadened their songwriting chops. Love the snake charmer organ and it's a strong, emphatic chorus. They were ahead of their time really as five or six years later, The Charlatans and Inspiral Carpets were having hits with exactly this sound.

This is like the nightmare pairing for me - FS's vocals by this stage are like a blunt sawblade through one of my earholes, and B's German cabaret stylings are like pouring hot gravel into the other.
I may come back to this one if i can steel myself enough...

I don't know, G... in a tune like 'Teenage Kicks' he seems to keep his vibrato much more in check. There are little quavers, but in a tune like the one above and his 80s solo hits it sounds much more pronounced and painful to my ears, sorry.
