I'm a big fan of Brecht/Weill songs. Ute Lemper's version of Surabaya Johnny is a bit too cool and controlled for my liking (I prefer it sung by Lotte Lenya, Dagmar Krause, Marianne Faithfull or even Bette Midler, as well as male voices like Marc Almond or Tom Robinson).
But it's still an easy win against Feargal Sharkey impersonating David Surkamp

The first does enough with the song / genre to best an attempt at second rate New Wave with seriously annoying vocals...Vote A

Vague sense of creaking wheels on a tumbril entering this round... Not a great fan - which is litotes - of Brecht and Weill. Even Nina Simone couldn't make something musical, rather than dramatic, out of their 'songs' and, renowned interpreter of the material that she is, I doubt Ute Lemper would have got near a cup without a pesky U to deal with. The lyrics sound better in German, but I'm floundering here in an attempt to be positive. I just don't like this sort of thing. Listened to all of it mind. My medal is in the post, apparently.
I was a fan of the Undertones all the way through their career, bought everything and never had a problem with Feargal's voice - how could I, considering who else I like? I enjoyed the Love Parade album, even though it was a bit of a growing-up record and I wanted them to be teens forever. The O'Neill brothers and their songs were the stars of this album, which may be why FS picked up his ego and left. A pity, because That Petrol Emotion (stupid name for a band) never got close to the heights of the Undertones

B is smashing. It’s got a touch of the Paisley Underground sound about it.

I was wondering where I'd heard A before when I saw neige'd post and was reminded of listening to some slap happy a few days ago -a much better version but I'm still not thrilled. However, it's more appealing than B, far too eighties for me, rolled up sleeves an' all.

I admit I searched for English lyrics to A as I've not got this far on Duolingo yet. Well, the voice is sensual enough and the older I get in my days the more I can appreciate just that alone.
The mid section in B has a nice pace and beat to it, why didn't they base the song on that instead of the flat footed stomp of the rest?

Ute
Decca released a bunch of cds in the late 90s under the Entartete Musik (degenerate music) banner - all composers who had been suppressed by the Nazi’s. Some great stuff there - Korngold, Schoenberg, Zemlinsky - THO a lot of it was vocal/opera (not my bag, man). The two (?) volumes of Berlin Cabaret Songs were decent but I’m more of a Peter Pears/ Britten Folk Songs wallah and the Marianne Faithful live record had just come out (Twentieth Century Blues) and I liked that more. Nice to see it crop up.
Undertones
Wouldn’t have been my pick from their last record (Valentine’s Secret is the one) but this clips along. Surprised nothing has been chosen from Positive Touch it’s their crowning moment.
