A what a track, what a voice, what an arrangement. this & that weird Morricone twist number are my firm favorites so far.

There's no denying the power and beauty of Ruffin's voice and this is as heartfelt a tune as any, but I find the arrangement quite clunky and over-egged. A bit of restraint would've helped.
Brother John on the other hand has a fleetness of touch and sails along wonderfully, with a great mandolin solo and lovely harmonies.

The arrangement on the Ruffin track is a bit heavy, but there's no denying the vocal prowess..The second track is quite competent for what it is, but it's just not for me..Vote A

Figures the two best songs in this round so far would go against each other! A is of course awesome, but in a Preludin-approved kinda way. I would think the Dillards would not have that luxury, so I'm gonna throw B a vote here. I know it won't win (and not sure it even should), but I also want to reward a great pick that's having some unfortunate luck in facing such strong opposition.

Marrying Ruffin's raw soul vocal with a quasi-classical, chamber pop backing is an exercise in contrasts that works really well and he certainly sings the hell out of it. The problem, for me, is the song; the melody seems all over the place, I feel I could listen to it 50 times and not remember it. B really is a lovely thing - subtle, restrained with a wonderfully carefree vibe. Perfect in its way. New for me and I am delighted to have met its acquaintance.

Nice to see this round flying high for a change. B is absolutely brilliant and a nice surprise to me, I had this record in* my to do list and it has advanced upfront.
To bad it's facing such a glorious opponent. Opposite to what G said, I just have to read the title and the melody comes immediately to my mind. And it feels good.

Dave's no Daniel Johnston is he? Bloody big bollocks of a track, isn't it? I was ready to hate both of these based on all the positive comments so far, but this is actually quite lovely. Seems to be a reference point on how to do this stuff correctly, everything fits together beautifully.
The Dillards are kicking off quite Pentangly, it's always nice to hear a bit of double bass. The instrumentation is bloody lovely, but the vocals are very cloying 60s pop stylings that either don't fit, or just annoy me. Ruins the track completely for me, if there's an instrumental version, I could've gone for it.

You could say the same thing about B! in fact I found that one much busier and far less memorable. A

Damn, great match. Shame one of you weren't in one of the other weaker ties. After playing both a few times, i'm going with the sound and energy of B. Hearing the Dillards with a more electric sound and the frenetic pace is really appealing. Apologies to A.

Won't hear a word against his mid-’60s work with the Temptations, some of the greatest male soul singing I ever heard, but this is pants, a really appalling sound/arrangement/production. A dreadful waste of talent. The would have had to go some to lose this tie, but it was a better than adequate piece of sunshine pop. It reminds me hugely of something, but I can't quite place it*. Not a band I ever had a lot of time for, but this is really rather lovely. B
