Nice tune, Dan. the video really helps. the song doesn't really go anywhere but why should it? it's a nice, moody thing. I liked it but this goes to A. I was more tolerant than enthusiastic of "young americans" on it's release. now, in the context of his career arc at the time it seems absurdly confident. the players and the arrangement boost a pretty strong tune. the way his vocal is mixed is just nuts - it's so good. it might be an "obvious choice" but I think it's got the goods.

I'm going to have to take Dave here, not only is it a good and interesting choice, but I'm not a fan of Auerbach or the Black Keys A

Both of these guys showing up was probably inevitable; glad we got it out of the way early (though I'm sure it's not the last we'll see of Davey B.)
A is the more interesting song by many, many miles. Probably about in the middle as far as obscurity vs. predictability goes; at least it's from an album that there's varied opinions about.

I honestly thought I would automatically vote against A's unimaginative Bowie pick, with it's awful Saturday Night Live Band-esque backing track and Dave's (I assume it's him) limited saxophone noises, but it's very lucky to have been drawn against the fucking snoozefest that is the Auerbach tune.

Geez, the Auerbach track needs some build up and pay off..It's just one vibe all the way through..Even if it is an unimaginative choice, Vote A

I rarely play YA these days and A sounds almost new to me. Not bad, and it gets better towards the end.
B is basically not enough.

What a glorious long intro that is - icey Euro synth, that soaring sax ( my favourite thing about the track), plonky piano, robo beat, he's fashioning a new music here and pointing the way to Station to Station. Love the way the track teases out the slow release of the chorus, which is a moment of absolute triumph when it arrives. One of his best.
The Dan A track was pretty but slightly bland. Well sung, in a Van Morrison kind of way, it rather lacked purpose and drifted into background music, but not bad

Man, huge mismatch; tough tie for you, B. There would have been a few Black Keys tracks i might have gone for here, but B just isn't in the same ball park as A for me.

I'm predisposed to vote against the obvious pick, and I never liked Young Americans anyway, as you would expect. In some ways it could be seen as quite forward thinking, but it's thinking forward towards a horrible 80s plastic sound. And that sax annoys me in an 80s US film soundtrack song sax kinda way.
Dan Auerbach has too many consecutive vowels in his name to be trusted, we used to have anti-fraud rules which checked for this kinda thing at work. It's not a massively exciting song, but I like the hollow melancholy of the droning strings in the background. Reminds me of The Carpenter. Don't really like his singing and stuff though.

A does go on a bit. It's lucky to have been drawn against etc.

I've bored myself, let alone everyone else, with what I think about the album this track came from, so I can't imagine that anyone who chose it was looking for my vote, so they're not going to get it, and I'm going to save myself a few precious minutes by not listening to either of them and voting for B

Awful squawking and over-emoting in A, reminiscent of the theme to some second-rate 70s US cop show my folks would watch on a Saturday night. It's OK that Bowie was a fake when he was doing his glam stuff, but soul? my foot
I genuinely preferred
B
even tho' he's as much of a fraud as the Dame, he carries this off

Not a great fan of his soulboy phase but it beats the hell out of old Dan's offering.
