I like DG and was sort of rooting for him but I'm going B despite wanting to know what the fuck is up with that video??. still, just talking about the music - I thought it was pretty exciting. Dexter Gordon was an excellent musician but I'm going to go with the unknown quantity here in SPITE of that video that I can't imagine ever wanting to watch again.

B is one of the first things I've from the 2020's that I don't actively dislike. I probably wouldn't buy it, but that's something that should be rewarded

Tough. As much as I want to vote for A, that's an odd choice - too long and not enough variation, as good as the playing is.
As much as I want to vote for B, it's more 'interesting' than it is particularly good. It really doesn't do much (the vid definitely leaves more of an impression than the 'song,' what little there is of one).
A I guess, though I'm betting there's other tracks from the same period that would've engaged me a lot more.

Post Bop is one of my favourite genres of jazz music, but if I were at a club and these guys started playing this I'd probably take a washroom break and then head to the bar. It's nice, it's competent, but it's very unexciting, and at almost 19 minutes, way too long to hold my interest right now.
I'll go with the Kenyan freaks. Short, sweet, and grating. Lovely.

DG track is fine for what it is..Competent post-bop jazz..Much prefer the two minute Kool-Aid Chaos of Duma, though..Enthusiastic vote B

Aw, c'mon, you lot can't be serious. I listened to B first and then just needed 15 seconds of A to decide my vote (I'll play it complete later)
A
Edit: played A yesterday. Great track.

B is nearly very good indeed, which is to say it's arresting and dramatic and certainly leaves an impression. However ultimately it misses the mark for me, it's just too much of a bad trip for me to willingly subject myself to. If only they could sweeten their horror show abrasiveness with some more harmonious, pop elements ( something The Prodigy understood for instance) then they'd end up with a better track. The DG track has a lovely lazy swing, but at 19 minutes is very indulgent and doesn't do enough to surprise. I can see why some may want to punish this selection, but ultimately it is more my thing.. Oh, good match. I am quite fine with B if it wins, as it's an interesting pick with some energy and attitude and doesn't outstay its welcome. And speaking of outstaying its welcome, we have A 😂 hopefully skopey will return in time to cast his disapproving vote against another long jazz track. And this one is a doozy, a whole side-long giant from '64. I can see people find it boring but i love it; a relatively basic modal track that focuses just on the hypnotic power of that simple vamp and the extraordinary talents of the players. Dex was a giant of the sax, literally. Nobody had as beautiful and deep a tenor tone as he did, and his inventiveness as a soloist was legend. When he seemlessly throws in that little bit of The Mexican Hat Dance to amuse and delight the punters he knew exactly what he was doing. Art fucking Taylor should be spoken of almost as much as the next-generation guys who took up his mantle like Elvin Jones and Tony Williams. Kenny Drew is superb and probably would be better known if he hadn't decided to live most of his career in Europe, and NHOP was just about 18 when this date was recorded in Paris! Formidable! A shout out must be given to the sound of the room itself, captured to perfectly by Woolf and the French boffins. When Dex and Byrd blow their horns there is a magnificent delayed echoed bleed of their notes caught by the other mics in the room, which just wraps itself around your mind as the record plays. A track for the ages.

'a track for the ages' but unfortunately, I don't have ages. I'm perfectly prepared to listen to DG on a three-minute single, but not this length.
Can't say I fancied this much, either, but fange said he was going for the wooden spoon this time around, and I'm perfectly prepared to help him out.

Well, all these posters giving away their choices, it seems like poor sportsmanship to me. I say we not only penalise them, but restrospectively strip them of any supposed wins they may have had in previous cups. And kick their parents and grandparents in the shins. It's what decent folk would do. I don't know if I've got the full 18 mins to listen to this, but I could almost be persuaded over to the lighter side of jazz by some of these choices. Good playing, and those drums are really high in the mix here, lovely and crisp. I'll come back to this one.
Duma are just another example of the depth and breadth of exciting, innovative music coming out of Africa at the moment. Admittedly, they don't understand close harmony singing as well as The Prodigy, and are much the worse for it. However, I think this electronic, pummelling thing becomes an almost ambient, abstract take on grindcore, and is a sheer burst of darkly joyous energy. Beautiful.
Abstain.
