Moved this from General Blethering:
Went to the new local Amazon Fresh market, that just opened. Generic. Other than a special shopping cart for Prime members which they sign into and it senses/tabulates whatever is thrown into it, nothing special. Mostly boxed processed major brand items, in a sleek painted black loft atmosphere. No real purpose to go there. The danger is if that they use their heft to wipe out other grocers and then all we have to eat is expensive Whole Foods or generic highly processed boxed foods. Not good.
It appears now Amazon are looking to open department stores or buy one of the existing chains. So the company that hurt bricks and mortar retailing may be responsible for its rejuvenation. We'll see...

I bought three vases in an auction yesterday.. does that count? I'm very excited by them. I bought one of them believing it to be a Kralik ( a Bohemian glass maker similar to Loetz)) piece from the 1900s. Further research hasn't disabused me of that. The other two I believed to be French from the 1930s. I've now found out one of them was made in the States in the 30s, but from a mould produced in France, so I was half right. There will be collectors for that in The States. The other vase is still a mystery, but I know it's high quality so I have high hopes! Pictures please?

When I first got here, I went to a supermarket called Winco. It's huge and one of those volume stores. I hated it so I found a local Safeway pretty close by. Remember, everthing is pretty close by in Eugene. I'm thinking about starting to go to a little higher end supermarket now that my son's gone. He ate me out of house and home and I was going to the market every three or four days. It's called Market of Choice, is employee owned, and is a little closer than the current Safeway. Eugene also has a few very nice farmers' markets and I should probably take advantage of local farmers. I did in California. www.marketofchoice.com/A friend of mine married an English guy and when my wife and I were visiting, he was amazed to find out Safeway was American. He thought it was UK based.

Looks like Amazon's first Dept Stores are to roll out in SanFran and Columbus, OH. Their own private label clothing brand similar to the Gap/Old Navy casual style will be the main feature, with items ordered up on touchscreen/app and delivered to the dressing room. Hmmm... not sure if this is all that novel, interesting, or needed.

Well their phone bombed, their food delivery service bombed, and Amazon Studios doesn't do much anymore.
Meanwhile Netflix just bought Roald Dahl's Catalog. They will probably shoot it in Bulgaria and dub it.
