I think this is as good a place as any to dip my toes into the CUP. I remember buying The Only Ones album as a teenager and struggling with it. Most of the songs just didn't resonate with me. I don't think this is the track to win me over to them. It's vaguely Television-y but lacks their sense of structure. The drumming and guitar do add drama, but there's not much of a song there (..JC will be pleased to hear!). Open Sky Unit sound like a Hawkwind offshoot, but thankfully they're not. This is really great - I can dig everything about it from the commanding vocal, to the playful interplay of the brass and the crispness of the drumming. What a lovely discovery!

i've never understood the appeal of the only ones, but at least this pick is not the perennial cup favourite 'another girl another planet'. a bit of a shrug of the shoulders reaction. meh.
finally a jazz selection which thinks outside the box. it's good to know that the picker took my feedback on-board. a great groove to it too. well done, give yourself a pat on the back.

A isn't doing much for me, unfortunately. It's got the right elements but just hasn't combined them in the best way for this tie. Normally the idea of a bunch of Belgians playing jazz funk would be a right turn off, but this lot do it well. Good drumming, too, for a girl.

I have long held that there are many OOs songs at least as good as AGAP. This is one of them. The consensus here seems to be that they have one good song and that it's already been overused. So for me, anyway, nice to see A. And the picker deserves some reward for going against the grain.
B is the kind of obscure 70s jazz/funk obscurity I tend to like, of course, and there is indeed some lovely playing, particularly the sax breaks, but the groove isn't quite strong enough to make up for the fact that it's basically one riff for five minutes. I wish it were either tighter or freer, it sounds a bit stuck between two poles to my ears.

A seems to be trying to channel Pete Shelley with his vocal affectation, but doesn't seem to have any of the pure pop genius hooks that The Buzzcocks could instill into their tracks. Pretty workmanlike effort at a post-punk song. Has chords and drums and vocals and everything, all in the right place. Just needs someone with an idea.
Bloody hell, not many people are playing this cup with variety, are they?
A, just because I've heard enough of this stuff in one cup.

I have long held that there are many OOs songs at least as good as AGAP. This is one of them. Categorically, demonstrably untrue. B

A is pretty much of its time but I did enjoy it, after all that was my time too.
B has a nice groove and the interplay between alto and tenor (I believe) was enjoyable, but the singing got on my tits.

B is great -- the whole album is. A is as well - by far the best that I haven't picked. Too bad it wasn't in another match.

Two great choices here. I can't remember much about the OOs first time around but this appeals to me and I'll investigate them further. Nothing wrong with B they were like a less polite and more muscular BS and T but it's

Good match. The laconic vocals of A kinda match the feel in the verses, and there is some nice guitar work too; not really special but certainly enjoyable. B is a more unexpected mix of sounds, from the Nina Simone styled vocals to the punchy drums and sax. B by a head.

the first one sounds pretty Power Poppy to me. not bad, Dad. I'll go B I enjoy that "Not Your Father's Jazz" sort of stuff. pretty skronky in a good way.
