Only
Perrett drips over fairly muscular backing, great big dollops of melancholy. Pretty good for The Only Ones.
Open
Not that keen on the overbearing vocals but the brass suffuses it with a friendly, louche, sweet character. Love the lurch.

Toughest match of this final for me, this is my favourite Only Ones track, but I agree with Harvey. Normally the idea of a bunch of Belgians playing jazz funk would be a right turn off, but this lot do it well. Good drumming, too, for a girl.
In gratitude for finding this obscure gem, I'm voting B

I remember the first time... Lovers of Today was the bands first, self-released single and was single of the week in all the inkies I read, at the height of punk, so of course I hied off to buy it, and before I played it, I knew I had struck gold, just from the cover image. What the fuck was the guy on the right wearing? and what was that slash across the bottom of the picture, reminiscent of Holbein's The Ambassadors? And then I played it, along with Peter and the Pets on the B-side, and I was utterly hooked by both, mesmerised even. Perett's drawl and way with diseased sonmgwriting genius was the first thing, but Perry's wonderful guitar (the slashing attack of punk combined with a really melodic feel and and tone) and indeed Kellie's drumming (rare that I notice drumming AND approve of it) both slotted in. Then came their second single, almost the equal of this, followed by a mildly disappointing, but still fine by most standards, first album and a brilliant second album (with three or four tracks at least the equal of AGAP). OK, not much that's outstanding after that, but I recommend all the Peel session stuff.
Hatz says B is jazz/funk, so I didn't listen to it, as I have more than filled my lifetime quota.

i've never understood the appeal of the only ones, but at least this pick is not the perennial cup favourite 'another girl another planet'. a bit of a shrug of the shoulders reaction. meh.

ray, at least i afforded you the courtesy of listening to your selection before voting. i know you're not alone in not listening when voting, but to brazenly admit to it sticks in the craw. it has soured the cup experience for me. if your vote had made a difference to this tie, i would have asked oz to discount it. i find your response arrogant in the extreme.
