I never liked him. I liked her early in his Admin. I voted for them both in Presidential elections one time each. I held my nose both times but both seemed like the best use of my vote at the time.
In "The Devil & Daniel Webster" the Devil offers our stupid hero, in exchange for his immortal soul, "money & all that money can buy". In the movie version of "Primary Colors" the Clinton doppelgangers are betrayed by longtime booster Kathy Bates. Kathy betrays them because she feels that they've abandoned their idealism and become the very sort of political monsters they set out to challenge.
me, I'm not certain the Clintons ever had souls to bargain with or idealism to lose. I do think they are both political monsters of a certain type.
I remember when Jimmy Carter was asked what music he liked and he said "the Allman Brothers" I had no illusions about Jimmy Carter - he was a politician - no doubt about it. Still, when Jimmy Carter said he liked the Allman Brothers I took his word for it. True or not - I didn't give the matter a second thought.
I don't remember who Bill Clinton cited as music he liked. I'm sure he was asked and I'm sure I didn't believe a word he said. The bullshit detector is standard operating equipment . MY bullshit detector never believed a single word that man said about anything.
I have a hunch that charts and graphs were analyzed and experts consulted before Bill Clinton decided what sort of music he would say he liked.
The first election I voted for a Democrat for President was Michael Dukakis. Like most people, that convention was the first time I really took notice of Bill Clinton. Like most people, I remembered him because Bill Clinton would NOT shut the fuck up. He droned on and on WAY past his allotted time. It was not inspirational in the least though I suspect there were charts and graphs consulted that showed it would be. He was a weasel.
Like a lot of weasels - he WAS very good on television. This did ME no good at all. Every dimple, every lip bite seemed as calculated as any other aspect of his personal appearances.
My enduring image of HIM is his "I did not have sexual intercourse with that woman" face. his "how dare you" face. I saw that face a lot on C-SPAN when reporters would ask him about selling arms to dictators or his draconian welfare and prison reforms.
My enduring image of HER is elbow on the table and cheek in hand enduring one hostile, jackass question after another. Both Clintons have scarlet letters they will wear the rest of their public lives. To my way of thinking, Bill's is far more of his own making.
Early in Bill's Admin. Hillary said "they hate me because I don't stay at home baking cookies" Maybe that was the reason. they hated her. no doubt about it. Where Rush Limbaugh once said "Barbara Steisand" to label everything that was wrong with Liberals and Democrats he now said "Hillary" she became the single most trash-talked person in America in very short order.
How LIberal was she though, really? How far is the train trip from Goldwater Girl to talking about "Super Predators" or telling the international community they can suck it if they don't align with the U.S? Kathy Bates types might have thought the Clintons had flowers in their hair but I think, in attaching her wagon to his star that she adopted those same tactics and priorities.
I think the hate directed against both Clintons is a subject all to itself. I don't like them but, as political monsters go maybe they aren't harmless Harryhausen stop motion ones but I don't think they are evil, slithering Lovecraftian monsters either. I know many do.
Bill can't promote
anything anymore without being asked to answer questions he doesn't want to answer. He may not BE a Cthulu but he's comfortable in that world. Both Clintons enjoy money and all that money can buy.
I find the Clintons very unlikable but because of things they did or didn't do when they had the chance.
IMO there are newer monsters afoot. Congress members fly first class wearing their masks then post selfie vids of them screaming at mask mandate supporters like they are going to KICK THEIR ASSES.
I think there is a very strong chance that one party rule is just around the corner for America.
the Clintons might just end up looking like goofy stop motion monsters pretty goddam soon.
