Ben Ostrander wrote ! "This is a magnificent two record LP narrated by Richard Burton. Although not quite the same as Wells wrote it, WOTW is a kind of rock/radio play with modern interpretations. Included is a 16-page booklet with words, credits, and some great art work. Said to be two and a half years in the making, WOTW is better than most crap on TV, and makes for a fun evening around the stereo." Writing for Prog in 2020, Alex Burrows described it as "the ultimate concept album and best-selling prog soundtrack of all time", concluding "it's still an album that certainly ticks all the boxes of the true definition of 'progressive': groundbreaking, cutting-edge and seminal. I mean, spot on, right?

I never got that thing at ALL. to my ears it deserved to be in the used record bins among copies of "All This and World War 2" which is where I usually saw it.
maybe I let the hype get the better of me. needless to say it did not live up to the hype as far as I was concerned.

i enjoyed it, for Lynott's appearances. I remember it got a lot of late night radio debut hype, where they played it all the way through and never played it again, no songs ever made into regular rotation. i even helped find pristine copies when Sony/legacy(?) was scouring for source materials for the reissue. 15 million copies sold worldwide is claimed. It currently tours; www.thewaroftheworlds.com/#

I never heard it -- it was cut-out on delivery in the US and there were tons of albums that came out at the same time that I wanted to buy. I'd be very surprised if I liked it, and I don't see me exploring it at this late date.

I expected it to be along the lines of what Alan Parsons was dong at the time. to my mind it missed this very low bar.

You are being kind Johnny. It's utter shite. Well of coure it is. It's prog, it's Jeff Lynne, and Dvid Soul isn't on it.
Not that I've ever listened to it, mind, but as I may have said before, informed prejudice saves a lot of time and grief
