How do you view the franchise? 1 . Pretending Britain is still great/relevant 2. Proves Britain is great 3. Misogynistic hokum
4. Escapism as an art form
5. Harry Potter for men's men
6. Other?

They've made great efforts to move away from the 'misogynistic' label recently, haven't they? Women rule Bond's world.
I don't really have much interest in them. I've never sat through one, actually. Just not my kind of film.

I grew up with Bond so I love some of them but it's a mixed franchise overall. I will happily watch most of the Connery and Moore's however if they are on telly although the last few Moore's efforts are weak (having said that A View To A Kill is one of the great Bad movies of all time). They are really nostalgic for me and bring back lots of happy childhood memories watching 'em with the old man. I'm sure many people share something similar. The likes of You Only Live Twice and Goldfinger are pure delightful escapism...male fantasy writ large but done with style, humour and oodles of charisma from Connery who will always be the greatest Bond: sleek like a panther, elegant like an upper class gentleman but with a primal, animal quality and with just a hint brutal sadism underneath the surface that let you know he meant it. Unbeatable. And let's not forget John Barry's music, the classic theme tune and all those great Bond anthems. Heady, intoxicating stuff and always wonderful to hear the theme from, say, On her Majesties or Nancy Sinatra's You Only Live Twice. This stuff really transports you and the movies would be so much lesser without it. This stuff is really part of our shared cultural history.
I mean I only have to hear the music in this clip to get goosebumps. Nice one Bond-san! All together now....."DER-DER-DER-DER....DER-DER-DEEEEEER!" That's the stuff! Movie magic!
After Moore it's very mixed. Dalton was a precursor to Craig and underrated even if the movies were a bit prosaic and lacked the style and fantasy that made earlier ones so appealing. Brosnan had some of the sheen but none of the primal animalism and his movies are a low point and increasingly silly. I thought Craig started off very well - loved Casino Royale and Skyfall is a high point of the series - but the other ones were lesser Bond movies. I think Spectre was a bit of a mess and they changed the whole Bond-Blofeld relationship for no reason at all and made it silly.
I don't care about the fact that aspects haven't dated that well. It is what it is and those who criticise are a group of tedious, virtue signalling killjoys imo. The fact that he's a British hero winds some people up too (Good!). Anybody who uses the phrase "toxic masculinity" in regards to Bond should have a Walther PPK shoved up their arse.
I'm off to see the new one tonight but with reservations after the trailer. We'll see.

I caught the dramatic tail-end of a recent Craig Bond flick on Saturday night after I got home from seeing some friends play bagpipe jazz. I don't think I've watched one all the way through since the Roger Moore days (maybe I've seen a Pierce Brosnan one, I can't say for sure) and I can see why - all these action flicks from Bourne to, I dunno, Mission Impossible all seem very interchangeable nowadays. Does anybody get excited by these films based on the main character? I know it's a money-maker, but I'm always a bit surprised whenever there's a new Bond film, or even discussion around which actors would be capable of playing the role, provided they were the right sex and colour.
In conclusion, watching Daniel Craig and Christof Waltz try to outsmart one another for a half-hour made for a fun cap to a good evening out, but I'm glad I didn't have to go through their back story.
*edit* I posted the at the same time as GB, and saw his mention of the theme music, and yeah, it IS a bit thrilling when you hear that motif come in toward the end of a long action sequence - that's when you know the bad guy is gonna get his ass kicked!

3 Not good enough for hokum, but vilely misogynistic, yeah 5 Not sure what this means, not familiar with MR Potter, but 'men's men', it is to laugh 6 Utterly irrelevant to me and my life

all of the above! I grew up on 'em. they're like ice cream to me. I don't eat it as much as I used to but I can sure eat a lot at once when I do. I love 'em all. yup. Each and every Broccoli produced Bond movie is for me. I won't say they are good or that they aren't bad by certain metrics, I just know that I can sit down, turn off my brain and have a grand old time with any of 'em. Moore took me the longest to come around on but once I bought him I could buy anybody. He really made the role his own - they all do. Ice cream might not be good for you but it sure fucking tastes good. I'll tell you - I watched "Skyfall" more than once recently and I just enjoyed the FUCK out of it.
my daughter is finally all keyed up to see a new Bond in the theater and I'm lucky I'm too broke because I'm still too spooked by the COVID to go to the movies. what a wimp. I don't deserve the best Bond yet.

I haven't watched an actual movie in a few years now. Just not my thing. And I mean ANY movie. Bond or otherwise. None. Nada.
Carry on.

I love the Bonds....
I used to sit and watch them with my gran (who was usually half a bottle of whisky down before the opening credits were finished) she loved them....she also used to smoke like a chimney and had some pretty questionable opinions in regards to the Catholic church and politics....people were just different back then including the makers of these films. It's genuinely baffling how sensitive we've become the last twenty years or so and this constant need to make art that is morally upright while dismissing old films as racist etc. In the words of Greta blah bah blah.
The Culture war which has been raging across the net since the all female remake of Ghostbusters is just so boring now. I barley watch the new version of films etc cause I still enjoy the old ones and have no time for moral lecturing when trying to enjoy a movie or TV show. I also believe it is been used by the so called Right Wing as a distraction from the bigger issues of the day.
The music certainly the John Barry soundtracks are absolutely stunning and I really feel that modern day directors could use a lesson in how music can be used to make a scene legendary rather than just memorable, may favourite is "Capsule In Space" but they are all pretty awesome.

Some of the best Barry music is in Moonraker, which is one of the weakest Bond films.
You just don't get that kind of quality anymore in these kinds of movies.

Do you know that line in Alan Partridge where Partridge says, "stop getting Bond wrong!" Well...they got Bond wrong. I am actually angry.

I guess the thing with the Bond franchise is that you know roughly what you're getting. You're getting a proper big-budget (these days, anyway, the last Dalton one was cheaper than Aldi) blockbuster action thing, were the cost goes on location/look and feel, and hopefully not much CGI. I've seen every single Bond other than the latest, and they're all probably quite crap, but enjoyable crap for the most part.
