I thought the main protagonist actor was very good. Enjoyable, but nothing more.

Well I think it was something more than enjoyable, but they fucked up with a dreary final episode.
I did grow to like the main character but I'm still not convinced he was much cop as an AKTA

didn't you think it was a major flaw that they were all just handed a bag of marbles and just told to play? play WHAT, exactly? Seeing as how every other game had clear instructions that had to be followed closely, why so vague here? it didn't make a bit of sense. No, not really - in fact i thought it was quite inspired to say that "ok, at the end of the time, one of you has to have all the marbles, and that person will live'. There were a couple of marbles games i played as a kid, and i'm sure there are variations of games all of the world, so i found that part no problem. The scenery in that episode, of a quiet residential neighbourhood of twisting lanes and medium density housing, with lots of coloured tiles and flowering plants hanging from the masonry was particularly touching for me. It reminded me alot of some of the neighbourhoods i lived in and visited in Japan back in the 90s, when they were already becoming pushed out by the push towards high density, high-rise living. And the sight of person after person being shot point blank in that backdrop was really spooky.

I finished watching it the other night. I really enjoyed it and even though it was nothing really new thought it was just very well done and unlike so many American TV shows and movies it avoided all the tiresome bollocks you get there these days. I loved the set designs in particular and thought it recalled The Prisoner a bit.
I guessed that #1 was the Host and liked the final episode. I presume he will go back to get his revenge or something which sets it up for series 2.
I know people interpret it as being anti-capitalist but I found it more anti-communist really. The squid games and the island seemed more like an allegory for a totalitarian state.

Do the games actually involve squid?

Do the games actually involve squid? Yes, they have to fight them in a giant tank.

with spear guns! this is the rare occasion when being only one episode in is an advantage. in the first scene of the first episode the narrator describes a children's game called the Squid Game. I think it might be one of them thar metaphor thingies.

What is it with Koreans and squid? If they aren't eating them like in Old Boy they are bloody fighting them. Weird little buggers.

Episode 2 was outstanding! It really took me by surprise and then you can see where it's going for the balance of the hour BUT it gets there in such a rich and clever way. LOTS of character development in just one episode!
