John Maher posted this on Twitter I'm just wondering which venues are still standing with the same names? Sheffield Top Rank is still there but it's now an Odeon (or it was five years ago). Blackpool Tiffanys is still there but a hotel that would definitely not entertain live acts such as Buzzcocks today. I think Liverpool Empire is still standing and Manchester Apollo too. Glasgow Apollo was O2 and I think has since closed altogether. Newcastle City Hall is definitely still there and a popular venue.

There's still a Taunton Odeon, but I've never actually seen it except on a street map, and don't know if it's still a venue. Hammersmith Odeon changed it's name to the Apollo, but still going.

I can't imagine Taunton Odeon saw many major bands even back then. Middleton (especially with Manchester being so close by) and Chelmsford too.

The El Mocambo closed down for a few years, then got bought by a billionaire developer and restored with a "state of the art" sound and video system so now Torontonians can spend small fortunes on tickets to see "legacy" acts.

I grew up with this as my local movie theater. The current owners turned it into a music venue. I've seen Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Guy Clark, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Los Lobos there.

What are the GREAT music venues, then?
I can't say I ever take much notice. It's all about the band or the singer.

I find that the sound may supersede all other factors in my own judgement. There are gorgeous, ancient, picturesque old theatres in my own city that more or less deliver on a "nine out of ten concerts will sound like some indefinable sludge", and...you might go see a favorite artist there under duress, but...you might also feel as if you've won the lottery when that artist winds up performing at a far better sounding venue.
We've kept a number of old theatres here in Chicago, somehow (some of which are fantastic on every level).

Glasgow Apollo was in a previous life Green's Playhouse. The Apollo was demolished in 85, last band to play there was The Style Council. The site now has a multi storey Cineworld Cinema.
It was a great venue but an absolute shithole.
02 is the 02 Academy out by the Gorbals or 02 ABC which burnt down when the Art School went up.

I really miss the House of Blues in Hollywood. I really believed Elwood Blues was on a mission from God when I went there. It was easy to see good from the cheap seats & I thought the sound was always fantastic.
it’s too bad Hollywood needs another strip mall.

I basically agree with you, although there is something to be said for atmosphere. There's a venue a VERY short distance from where I work that has very good sound and is very comfortable and very uninspiring. I saw Os Mutantes there several years ago; they were fantastic, annnnnnnnnnnd they might as well have been playing in a good ol' fashioned supper club.

Funnily enough, the one time I saw Os Mutantes was in a club here that...small place, good sound, ZERO charm. I can't help but think that I'd have been more moved in a better venue.

Another band I saw at the same place (in fact, the first band I saw there) was the North Mississippi Allstars, who had just released their first album (which I mostly enjoy). Played great but MAN what a band/venue vibe disconnect.
