Using it to talk about climate change as an existential threat to intelligent life and thus 'meaning' strikes me as hyperbole, a tactic, a deliberate attempt to 'blow minds'. Not that I'm a denier, far from it.
To be fair to him, he didn't talk only about climate change. I guess the original discussion was broader, he didn't specify any one thing but was looking at the likelihood of our own extinction whether it's war or flooding.

Interesting. But he basically talks about the demise of human kind rather than earth I think.
Personally I believe earth still exists when we are long gone.
The 'meaning' I don't know, that is a tricky one. It's not like we have already come to a point where everyone can look at a certain phenomenon and attribute the same meaning to it. Was there ever one to start with?
As it is, there is no such thing as an undisputed meaning which makes it difficult for me to grasp exacty what is lost once the galaxy loses its meaning.

Science destroyed meaning.
Humans, over the last few thousands of years, constructed a sort of collaborative project that instilled meaning in our lives over the millenia.
Now that rational thought has pretty much eradicated it, we are left with emptiness and individualism.

I prefer to think of it like this:
all these bits of rock are floating about and the only bit with thinking lifeforms destroys itself
unless you believe Dougie and Toby, in a couple of hundred years there'll be nothing but bits of rock floating about. What is the point of it?

Someone find me some better metaphors. I mean, humanity wasn't really a collaborative project without individualism, was it? Slavery didn't seem to be that much of a collaboration. Neither did denying women or the common man the right to vote. What good did a lack of rational thought bring us?

I think what Toby is getting at is that we are in the midst of a spiritual crises in the west hence why we lack meaning and purpose in our lives (certain groups are less affected by this due to them holding onto traditional religious beliefs that provide this meaning). Without the religious framework that satisfied this innate impulse/need our lives have become increasingly empty and driven by individualism (consumerism, hedonism etc) because this aspect of our psyche is not being satisfied. You see this in a lot of our behaviour these days. Although we seem to be going off on a tangent now on the thread.
