Something I've long said, one reason I also never microwave anything in plastic or use coated cookware. www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/some-fast-food-items-contain-plastics-linked-to-serious-health-problems-new-report-shows/ar-AAQ0qjV?ocid=msedgntp
A new study out Tuesday reports that far too often, small amounts of industrial chemicals called phthalates (pronounced THA-lates), which are used to make plastics soft, have been found in samples of food from popular outlets including McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and Chipotle.
George Washington University researcher Lariah Edwards, professor Ami Zota and their colleagues purchased 64 fast-food items from national burger chains McDonald’s and Burger King; pizza chains Pizza Hut and Domino’s; and Tex-Mex chains Taco Bell and Chipotle, all around San Antonio, Tex.
The study found harmful chemicals in a majority of samples collected. Phthalates are linked to health problems, including disruption to the endocrine system, and fertility and reproductive problems, as well as increased risk for learning, attention and behavioral disorders in children.
A selection of popular fast food items sampled in this study contain detectable levels of replacement plasticizers and concerning ortho-phthalates. In addition, food handling gloves contain replacement plasticizers, which may be a source of food contamination. These results, if confirmed, may inform individual and regulatory exposure reduction strategies.www.nature.com/articles/s41370-021-00392-8

as someone who doesn't own a microwave and eats primarily RAW fruit and veg, this is a non-story.

What an earth have you got against cooking veg! of course, i cook them, just never in a microwave. i have a salad at least 5 times a week, G. i look forward to it. i got some radishes on sale from mercadona today. not had them for a while. they set me up for the day. i also snacked on a raw carrot. now there's a vegetable that tastes better uncooked!

Blimey no wonder you're so thin. Your food bill must be so small. You're lucky in a way.

I hear that drinking bleach after eating fast-food is an effective phthalate cleanser.

I gave away my microwave oven more than 5 years ago. I've never missed it.
I rarely eat anything from restos. But still, I'm sure some of the stuff we buy at the superket has been through "the process", whatever that is. Even fruit nad veg you buy has to be thouroughly washed before consumption, what with all the chenicals used in order to produce the good looking stuff (argh, don't get me started). ANd that's saying nothing about what's in the water the produce engulfs during growth.
We're doomed.
But then there's a strong argument for being exposed to stuff in moderation so tat your body can learn to deal with it. I remember a friend whose three kids stayed home right up until they were school aged. Util then, they had basically been exposed to nothing nasty in their sheltered environment. All three, one afte rthe other, suffered greatly from differentailments for at least their first two years of school.
In French here, there is an old expression "on engraisse pas un cochon à l'eau claire". Literally, you don't fatten a pig on clear water. Some truth to that I think.
