i recently renewed my contract with my ISP, always a painful experience, and had my fibre connection upgraded from 600mbps to 1gb. in order to check that this change had been carried out correctly, i ran a speed check on my computer and was pissed off that the download speed showed at 250mbps! the supplier sent an engineer round yesterday and he told me that it's quite normal for a wifi connection and that you can only get something close to 1gb by connecting your computer directly into the router via cable, which defeats the object. he demonstrated this to me and the speed test showed 900mbps.
anyway, although my internet connection is quick and i don't experience any problems with apps like zoom, a 250mbps wifi connection does seem pretty poor considering that i have a 1gb fibre connection.
did the engineer fob me off or am i being naïve expecting a faster wifi connection?

250mbps is pretty reasonable for a wi-fi connection. The engineer is right, you generally need a direct cable connection to get near the highest speed. You've also got to think that other things are connecting, slowing things down, TV, phones, the fridge if you're posh, whatever.

cheers fishy!
i'm not posh, so only have a couple of laptops, phones and a tablet connected. i also have a speaker plugged directly into the router.
like i said, everything seems pretty quick, but the 250mbps on my laptop did seem a little low, especially since it's not too far from the router. i'm treating myself to a new laptop at christmas. i wonder if the newer technology will help with the speed as my current one is 8 years old!

Newer tech will definitely help. For instance if you get solid state disks, it's a big performance improvement over the old hdd hard drives. More memory is always helpful, and just having a clean-ish system without years of bloaty software updates is a big help.
