When ( if indeed ever) did you stop buying or caring about the Cure ? Where they lipstick mouth miserabilists or your go to party band? I play them on a regular basis and although I obviously enjoy them, I am surprised at their popularity.

I feel exactly the same way about them as I do New Order and Depeche Mode - futile, foul, awfule
popular bands with inexplicable crossover cult/mainstream success.
97% of what I've heard is joyless and mechanical and leaves me cold. But there's about four or five tunes I like quite a bit.
'A Forest', 'Inbetween Days' and 'Close To Me' are great. I keep meaning to get Seventeen Seconds 'cos I saw it do very well in a Twitter 80s album poll recently - but then again, so did Sandinista! and I wouldn't pick that one up if Maya Jama dropped it at my feet.

Awfule, really ?
I can see how they would get on your nerves. It is that crossover success as you say that is strange. I think Smith's voice is marmite.

I don't mind them, but they're not a band I've ever liked enough to consider buying anything by. At their best, they were kind of a carefree Smiths, jangly guitars and those thin melodies that actually sound quite joyous. Inbetween Days, Close to Me, even Love Cats, that kind of thing. Something fun, every once in a while, but not something I'd ever listen to a full album of. Their festival headline gigs these days are an example, really, I don't know that they've got the material to do a full set, you do the knitting while they're on in the background, and tune in occasionally when they catch your interest.

I think it's their best record. But I also think that about Sandinista, so we may have a pattern here.

As a band they are wholly unlikeable.

One of the best UK singles bands of the 80s and early 90s for my money. From the early days until about Wish, they have many tunes i would call GREATE pop-rock songs. And Disintegration is a terrific album.

Never a fan, though I do enjoy their popper stuff as radio fodder. Was a very interesting time in the late 80s and early 90s of the Cureheads in the US, for many prior to Grunge, their success spelt Alternative in the US along with New Order and then Depeche Mode's massive success,

Interesting question. They were my favorite band with Boys Don't Cry and were an epiphany to me. In the US, they sold Faith and Seventeen Seconds as double album and didn't get it at all. I jumped back on board with Head on the Door and not so much Pornography and the Top. I like my poppy Cure, I guess. They are a very conflicting artist/band for me. Love or disinterest.

I know Smith is considered the Goth Godfather, but his songs don't get the respect they deserve.

I was a fan around the time of 'Faith' and I like the singles around then. I went off them fairly quickly after that, maybe the lipstick put me off!

New album out soon, apparently. First in 18 years or something
