We'll be having my sister, her husband, her four kids and a couple of their partners, as well as B's brother over for Christmas dinner on the 25th. 12 people in total, including us. Everyone's fully vaxxed, so I'm not too concerned, but you never know...it'll be a lot of work, but I'm looking forward to having people in the house that aren't my drunk bandmates (one of 'em almost fell down the basement stairs last week).
Other than that, I've got two and a half weeks off work that I'm very much looking forward to, even though it's unpaid, as I'm a contractor. They do hand out a fairly generous Christmas bonus, though, so that'll help.

i've heard of 'em. they are a legit academy. don't know anyone who has worked there, so can't comment on what they are like to work for. there are more and more academies looking for teachers here. i've received several job offers for next year and i don't even have the CELTA. the company who offer me most of my teaching work told me that they are likely to be getting a lot of work next year. brexit has certainly opened up more opportunities for native speakers who are resident here. but it's a nightmare for them to recruit from the UK. Things have changed a lot over the last year or two. I worry that I'll never be able to work abroad again. Waiting on applications for Berlin and Budapest jobs.

I thought what should I do for Xmas since I'm up here all by myself and not going down to Bay Area. It would cost too much money - $200 - $300 for flight, $200 a night at least for hotel and rental car for $125 - $150 per day, so I decided not to go. My son will be in Alaska so I'd just be celebrating with my ex, my daughter and the ostensible grandmother. My in-laws, whose house we used to go to on Xmas morning, moved a few hours north of the Bay Area so they're not a destination anymore either.
But the day after Thanksgiving, I decorated the house. I didn't want to be that ol' curmudgeon that doesn't acknowledge the holidays in a "Bah, humbug" way.
So I have a tree, indoor decorations and hung lights and some outside decorations.
After my divorce, I spent a couple Xmases alone, and got used to it, and I can always facetime the family Xmas Eve and morning.
We were required to take Xmas and New Year's week off, but the new management regime is probably not so inclined. And I have no reason to anymore. It used to be fun when the kids were younger, but they do their own thing nowadays.

At work, we are "open for business" for 2 1/2 days between Christmas and New Year's. But if we don't use up our alloted vacation by Dec 31, we lose what we didn't use. That means that there are very very few people actually working then. Since I am pretty much alone, I galdly work those 2 1/2 days, therey a) letting my teammates relax with their kids and families whle knowing someone is at the ready and b) letting me do some clean up in the flurry of stuff that we produce in the month prior to Christmas (you wouldn't believe the data storm we deal with at this time of year, every year - nothing to do with the season, just bad timing really. Doesn't bother me at all. I actually king of like it. No phones, no e-mails....just me and what I have to do, at my rate, on my terms, at my desired schedule........ Bah humbug!
